Truly inspired many a paddler. If you never heard of him, read up on him a bit. Heck of a genuine nice guy who devoted his life to paddling and teaching others how to safely.

Back in the 90’s I had recently bought my first used kayak (Perception Sea Lion) and was at the kayak fest when a friend came up and asked me if I wanted to be a volunteer for Derek who was testing two paddlers for some sort of certification with the BCU. I canceled work for the next two days and had a blast getting “rescued” and the like by these two poor trip-leader wannabes. Derek was tough on those guys!
RIP Derek.
