RIP Johnny Ohlandt Sr.

If you had the pleasure of knowing Johnny Ohlandt Sr. then you were blessed. He was instrumental in the formation of a group to save the Morris Island Lighthouse in 1999. He called her his “Old Girl” and grew up playing with the children of the keepers in and around the island. While he was able he would take his jon boat out every day to visit her and his island. I cherished passing him and Pam in the creek to have him pull up next to us and share a Miller Genuine Draft beer. His stories and the dialect in which he told them will always be in my memory. I’ll miss seeing you in the creeks my friend, but don’t worry about the lighthouse, we’ll take care of her for you.

I heard of his passing from one of my neighbors. Mr. Ohlandt’s home is down the street from me. Often times when I would walk my Isabelle (I miss her) if he saw me he would holler for me to come over and sit a spell. Always polite. A beer was always offered. I would sit and he would look over the inlet and talk about the marsh and island history. He was an interesting man.

I`m sad to hear that.I knew him well through his daughter who was my friend and neighbor for 10 years. My next door neighbor started the group, the first “meeting” was four of us neighbors sitting around her picnic table drinking a beer.I lost touch with them since they moved to Barnwell and I to Beaufort. Thanks for posting this, I will try to locate them to express my condolences.
