been kinda quiet on actual reports since i moved from charleston but finally got around to actually putting some scouting/effort into fishing and got something good. went out to a place called crooked river tonight, which is very similar to cooper river, and is only 5 minutes from my house. ive been told by several that the river holds big sharks so of course i had to put that rumor to the test. i caught some baby blacktips the other day and watched someone else get a big sandbar, so yes there is truth to it. i found a nice stretch of flat bank i can paddle to and set down a folding chair so i put my rod in a sand spike, paddle out a king mackerel head, and begin the waiting game. after the tide starts coming back in my 9/0 starts screaming, but as soon as i put the fighting belt on and go to set it it stops. i thought surely my bait was gone so after a few minutes i checked it and its still there. i put another small piece of king mackerel on top of what i have and paddle it back out. this time im sitting there waiting belt on and 5 minutes later it starts ripping and i hook up this time. after a 20 minute battle i see a big fin pop up and get it as close an im gonna get it to the bank. being the idiot i am i went in and grabbed it by the tail and drug it ashore to claim my catch. i put the tape measure to it, took a few pics, took the hook out, and released it all within a few minutes and it swam off strong. 7 foot sandbar out of a river…ill take it!
Now that’s a nice shark!! You be careful…we don’t want a bigger one dragging you out with it! Thanks for sharing!

I hear you, ONN! Glad to see you still at it. I hope all is well, man.

Just think. That would be bait for the sea monster!

sea monster ate a 9 footer…7 footer should be no problem!
Methinks the sea monster took a bite out of the 9-footer, and happened to eat the transmitter as well. A 12 footer could have done that.

That’s a biggun…how long did the fight last?

took 20 minutes to put it on the riverbank with only 50 yards of line out to start with. ran fast for about 10 seconds on the strike, thrashed on the surface and took another 50 - 100 yards on the hook set, then made several mini rus as i was bringing it in.
quote:That "thrashed on the surface and took another 50 - 100 yards" is the part that had to be pretty exciting. That shark "thrashing" on the surface had to be memorable.

it was about 1am when i hooked it so didnt get a great look, but i could see and hear a very large splash reflected off the moonlight. at the very least i knew it wasnt small, especially when i just stood there watching it strip line for a while.
Dang, nice one! i’d be leary about jumping in and grabbing something that big, lol. especially in the dark.
