Riverhawk

Just scored a sweet little 13 footer. Trolling motoring it now, but want to get a small outboard for her. What’s the largest hp I can swing on this little boat. Think its rated for 5hp. Can I go a little bigger?

Thanks

The biggest issue is the amount of force that the higher HP engine will generate on the transom, however, I wouldn’t think that a 9.9 would have that much more force than a 5 HP.
Also, what is the max weight capacity? A heavier engine weighs more- in a boat that size, the boat with 1 or 2 grown men + battery, gas and gear is probably close to max weight. I looked at Mercury’s website- a 5 hp 4 stroke weighs 55 pounds; a 9.9 weighs 96 pounds. [:0]
Another consideration is insurance- you must have proper HP if you want coverage.
Hope that helps-

Fact: a 9.9 has twice the power as a 5 HP and at least twice the amount of thrust. That’s a big difference when yor talking about a small boat. You may end up with a taco’d transom if you run it hard.

Had a 15 on one and it would fly. 9.9 is probally perfect
