Road construction grass???

What does the highway dept use to get the grass/weeds after they do a repair? I have an area in the backyard that I just want something green!

Thanks

Just wait!!..highway grass will grow in no time!!
The seeds are carried by the winds everywhere! Our backyard and parts of the front yard are full of that grass! It’s hardy and invasive and grows quickly and the seed spikes are a pain in the neck!! Our centipede grass in the front yard doesn’t grow that quickly, maybe needing to be cut once every two weeks. But, in two weeks that highway grass seed spikes stick up and make the front lawn look terrible. If you want something green, just pick up some pieces of st. augustine sod and ‘plug’ it into the open area. It’ll take time but it will look better than the highway grass.

they have a way to get rid of highway grass in st Augustine.

Allie or alley It only kills the highway grass

A lot of times the Dept. Of Transportation does hydro seeding. That’s why you see the blue greeen tint.

Pensacola Bahiagrass is what you see on the highway.Other varities are Argentine and Common.

I don’t suggest planting it unless you like mowing frequently,or sharpening/changing mower blades.Nothing dulls the blades quicker than the seed stems. One rain after a fresh cut and stems will be popping in two days.

Centipede is an excellent turf, very little maintenance involved, why its called poor mans grass.Given equal conditions, centipede will eventually choke out Charleston grass.

You might be able to call Sanders Brothers Construction or Banks Construction and get a brand name of what they use, but like others have said, it’s not the best grass to have in a residential yard. It is called ‘Erosion Control’ on the side of the road.

Theres nothing like the "Smell" and sounds of the creek. Its not just one thing that makes it familiar..its all of it.

Thanks, its in the very back of the yard so not worried about looks.

Bahia grass is extremely invasive. Plant a little and you’ll get more than you bargained for. It require frequent mowing that contributes to the distribution of the seeds that cluster at the top of the seed stems. Most bare spots in lawns are related to shade and moisture which promote fungus which kills the grass. If your spot has direct sunlight, and it is not holding water after a rain, it should grow centipede or St. Augustine with very little attention. On the other hand if it is covered in shade you will always fight mother nature to grow grass. If that is the case consider other landscaping options, but avoid that Bahia, dude.
