Rob won the spearboard open yesterday out of Georgetown for those of you who dont know yet. It was a nasty day, and we made it out there and back on 1 motor, the other being out of commission due to a blown lower unit at 430 AM. Came back in the rocks at 1 AM the next day. Long day, but well worth seeing a great buddy and a great diver show the world what South Carolina spearfishing is all about. Kent’s ingenuity with boats and Rob’s ingenuity with spearing made the day a huge success despite all the problems and the 8-10’ seas. Pics should be coming soon. Congrats again, and Kent, you are the MAN! Rob, you are the MAN!
Oh and for the report,

We had scouted some great fish a few days before the tournament and were confident in our chances. Kent and I prepped the boat till 1230 at night and had everything perfect. A few hours of sleep later we headed to the boat landing, that’s when the trouble started. One of the engines had trouble but after a couple hours kent figured it out and got us up and running. 20 or so miles out the unthinkable happens. One of the motors lower units blew out leaving us with one engine in solid 7-8’ seas 20-25 miles from the spot we wanted to dive. Everything that could go wrong did, Stephan was very ill, motor is broken, and we are only halfway to our spots. Immediately we went to plan B swapping our helium mixes for higher shallower mixes. Only able to manage 6kts speed in those seas was tough slow going but Kent got us on some nearby spots to try and salvage the day. First couple of dives are not real good, no shootable fish. Finally we arrive at one of our favorite spots and drop to find exactly what the spot is named for, Hog Heaven! Kent and I both shot some real nice hogfish on that dive. Things were looking up! Next spot we had never dove before but knew it was a good ledge. The Great viz allowed us to drop right in on the fish. First thing I see is a big 20 pound Red snapper that I promptly liftbag to the surface. Then I see the big daddy, Biggest red snapper I’ve ever seen alive, dead, in magazines… anywhere. He was a little too smart for me so I didn’t seal the deel. L At this point I started to do the math and had some real hope at winning. Kent pushed the boat back towards shore hoping to fill out the rest of our categories in a calculated gamble. Diving a wreck we picked up some sheepshead . The sharks seemed to want them almost as much as we did, big hungry Sand Tigers More than one got poked between kent and I. Picked up a couple more grouper then started the long slow ride home. We finally got the boat back around 2am limping in on one motor. With a good stringer we felt ma

Congrats Rob! You are correct in your assesment of Steven and Kent, first class guys. They are the kind of guys that spearfishing and diving need more of. So… what is next? Are we going to see “The Rob Hard-hitting spear gun”? You going to make the cover of some mags, TV deals?

It’s funny you mention that.
The TV show is called spearwars. www.spearwars.com
They will be sending a HDTV camera crew on the boat with us for the next few tournaments and outfitting us with mask mounted waterproof cameras and digital recorders to record the underwater action.
