I do stand behind the fact that I asked a reasonable question in the begining. RickK and boatpoor explained theri comments and I am ok. Here is the thing and if you are objective you will have to at least partly agree with me. The answers did have a “These questions don’t have anything to do with Lake Murrray” tone to them…that’s ok. Then Blue Runner comments on me calling them Rockfish which further confirms my point. A goodly portion of the population call them Rockfish. Anyhow I have enjoyed talking with you guys but it is time for this post to end.

I have fished for Stripers as far north as Ray’s Town, Pa. to Lake Martin, Al. to the south, Lake Texoma to the SW and Beaver Lake, AK. But the fastest catching and the most in a day was on the Roanoke. 3 of us caught 100 fish between 8am & 12pm we went in for lunch and purchased some more bait. Went back out at 3pm. and by dark had caught another 100+ fish. All but 1 was between 3lb & 5lb. The big fish was a female that weighed 39# on boga grips.
Go to www.captainponytail.com for info on the Roanoke.
Yes I have been about 5 or 6 times but not in a few years. We have had 1 100+ day. It is truly amazing. Water literally turned white when they spawned.
I think I might give it a try again this year.
Just got a report today that the rockfish/stripers are tearing it up in the river
Hey Rockbottom - I was just trying to be funny. When I started fishing in SC it sounded funny to hear people say “spottail” cause in NC we always called them puppy drum. I say call it what you want - if you know how to catch them and people know what you mean, well, then what does it matter?!?
p.s. I haven’t caught a pimpfish in a couple years and have never fished in Lake Murry.
It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!
Funny how different regions have different names for the same fish. I notice even around here in Columbia, the guys who fish the rivers alot in the spring often refer to the fish as rockfish, but I rarely hear of anyone refer to them as rockfish in the lake. Where I grew up, we didn’t have hardly any black/largemouth bass around, so stripers were commonly just referred to as “bass”.

blurunner, I always refered to them as bass! Never new any other name for them! Then I grew up and they were refered to as reds, drum redfish, bullreds or red drum It all depends where you grew up!
I have fished the Roanoke many times…My first trip we caught 347 and over 100 on the dead bait in my tank before we started using the live bait…me and 2 guys in an aluminum boat…I use to live a little east of Raleigh and it was about an hour drive to Weldon for me…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
how big are these fish?

ACTUAL FISHING UPDATE ON PACK’S LANDING: A friend showed me a couple of pictures that he had received this week form Packs showing a 28 lb.er and seveal others not quite as big but bragging size anyway. So, is it time to head that way??? Best time to go fishing is when you can.
Is that jon boat territory or can i run my deep V wellcraft? Wanting to do some river fishing next week and would rather do it from a boat.
Wellcraft V-20 sportfish with a 200 Evinrude
You can run a big boat up the river, just be careful coming out of packs landing heading out to the river. You can also put in at low falls on the other side of the river. Are they catching them on cut bait or live herring?
