That depends on how much money you have to spend … Seriously

… it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish !!!

2005 Sea Pro 2100cc / Yamaha 150hp 4-Stroke

35$ abu bcx from the flea market
45-100$ okuma (magda, convectors, coldwaters)
50-80$ diawa accudepths
100-200$ abu 6500c3, c4, rockets, 7k’s
180$ avet sx
300-600$ accurate 400s/500s

Probably missed a couple, but you will generally find 1 of these on the hardcore striper boats or even the weekend angler striper boats. Take your pick. All will get the job done. Best bang for your buck is something in the 60-120$ range.

The round Ambassadors are good dependable reels for the money. Even an old used 5000 will bring in some pretty big fish. As far as rods go it depends on how you are planning to fish. Live bait, spoons and certain artificials, such as U-rigs, might each need a different rod and/or reel.

Is the abu garcia bcx worth it? It is very cheap but usually abu garcias do good for me. And also is the main rod of choice the ugly stick striper addition?

My buddy burnt up a BCX in one season. I would spring for a little better reel. The Okuma reels seem to be about the best “budget” baitcaster. I use Abu 6500s on white stripes rods with power handles, but I also run 2 Shimano Stradic 4000s on striper rods. A lot of guys don’t use the spinners, but I have caught a ton of fish on those. The Stradic is not your average spinner though. Solid drag, worm gear, metal body, and lots of ss ball bearings. Part of the reason I like my spinners is that I can flip the bail and let the rig go. I don’t have to baby sit the spool. Comes in handy when fishing solo.

I caught my 100# tarpon on a Penn Battle spinner. Don’t get wrapped up in what everyone else uses. Get what you like, but make sure it will last.

Anything will get you started… but if you stick with it, you will end up with at least ABU 6500 C3’s on Ugly Sticks… I would bet that’s the most popular combo I see in boats.

I agree with what everyone else is saying. If you want “common” or “typical” get a 5500-6500 Abu Garcia and put it on a Ugly Stick- white or black. Solid setup.
No reason not to buy used stuff either if you are on a budget or just want to save money. Check out the Swap Shop or look for postings here on Striper Fishing. Half my stuff is used.
Reels can be hit or miss, but the ones I have bought on CF have all been nice. E-bay is a crap shoot. I’ve never gotten a dud rod. Rods are no brainer used buys. Just check them out closely first.

I, too, have 4 spinning rigs on my boat: Black and gold Penn’s from my saltwater days. Beginners find them easier to use and they are reliable. They do put more twist in your line though.
Tip to counteract that twist: before putting them up for the day, take the rig off let as much line out as you were using and drag it behind the boat. (Be careful of the prop!) Twist gone.
If you don’t already know- back your drags off on any reel at the end off the day and reset it the next time out.

Come on, Chip. What about my Zebco 33’s?

Dang Charles, I totally forgot about those. My VERY 1st striper was caught on a zebco33 with a big beetle spin. I didnt even know what a striper was. It was a life and bank account changing moment in my life…lol…

I especially understand about the bank account changing part.

I now use Battle ll 4000 combos when casting for stripers and redfish. Great setup for the price.

Originally started off with Battles, but was getting too many wind knots. I hadn’t bought them long before the Battle ll’s came out, so they let me trade them in for ll’s and they do much better.

I’ve been meaning to sell these, if you (or anybody else) are interested).

I’ve got four 7’ Striper Master rods, two with Shakespeare reels, and two 7’ Ugly Stick Striper rods that have been gathering dust for a while. The reels could use a good cleaning, but work.

Make me an offer.

I’ll get pics up soon. For some reason my files are too big. (since I updated to Windows 10.1 )

Well, that didn’t work.:question::question:

Abu Garcia 6500 C3, Ugly stick rods. I also have a few of the cabela’s Depth master III’s. Cabelas will put them on sell every now and then for 40 bucks and they really aren’t bad reels for trolling. I have 6 6500 C3’s and 6 of the Depthmasters and they will do just fine until I replace them with 6500’s.
