Rod for a 6 year old

What length is good for a five year old? All mine are 7 footers but looking for something a little shorter that a six year old can handle a little easier.

5 1/2 - 6 ft. Match it with a quality spincast

I bought my 5 year old Granddaughter a Princess rod and reel from Walmart, to get her started. I would say that it is 4ft long. It has a closed face Zebco on it. She got pretty good casting it. She practices catching tuna, in the back yard!

I already have a good shimano reel. Just need the rod to pair it with.

5-6ft. ugly stick, get a cheap rod, she’ll whack the living heck out of it. what size is the reel?

I’m so salt life I sued google earth for giving away all of my fishing spot’s.

x2 on the ugly stick if you already have a reel. not too expensive and even i havent broken one of those yet!

Walmart has a ugly stick spinner kit that comes with the typical tackle assortment box for $28 bucks. Unless you plan on putting your kid on some trophy fish, I’d say its a good investment for the price. I’ve had my 2.5 year old fishing an Ugly Stick with a medium/light Shakespeare spinner for about 4 or 5 months now fishing for trout. He’s dropped it in the salty water so many times I thought it’d be done for by now. A good rinse and a little gun oil and it still has good spin. I fish with it when he’s not with me and it’ll handle any trout and decent sized reds without making your butt-hole pucker. He doesn’t know how to cast it really well just yet, but he’s getting there. I figure you might as well teach em how to use a spinner since they will eventually have to pick one up.

Oh yeah, that rod is 6 foot by the way

That’s why they call it fishing, not catching…

Check with haddrells they are always up helping kids get started fishing.

Thank you StonoMan, we are absolutely ALWAYS looking to help get kids started in the sport we all love! We even occasionally hold kids fishing days during the warmer months.
I would agree with most on here that a 5’6 ugly stik is a great choice for the young ones to start with…you know a rod they can stick into a ceiling fan and it still comes back whole:wink:

dustin im pretty sure i have that same combo that i bought 1st trip to wal mart when i got here from boot camp and yes it takes a beating well. i mostly use it for trout and flounder but ive also successfully landed up to 29" redfish with it. takes a bit of practice to land a fish like that on a light rod but its a lot more fun when ya do!

Take the child to Haddrells . Half the fun is having the young one get into the sport by meeting a good fisher person who will talk to them and remember them when they come in next time.

Let me know how that goes at a big box

And go with a spinner. Better to teach with.

great advice!

I did this years ago. my kids are now in their mid teens. I can’t tell you the hours the Staff have spent with my kids - and me too - answering our dumb questions.

good folks in there.

you might save a buck some other place, big deal.

The zebco closed faces are so inexpensive and easy to use, and you won’t be hurt if one goes into the drink. I’ve raised three kids and with each one of them the simpler the better starting out. My oldest daughter still has her mini-mouse bobber on her dresser. At 5 years old the longer the pole the more chance you have of getting whacked with it not to mention the hook thats dangling around. Nothing like seeing them actually get into some nice fish, that’s the stuff that gives some of the best memories and builds some strong bonds between parent and child.

If you do get a closed face, DO NOT spool with braided line.

Agreed with the above, especially the 5-6’ length spinning combo.

I taught my son at 3 years old how to throw a 6’6" spinning rod.

I have a 6 ft med action shimano spinning rod you can have.
