Rod/reel combo opinions

Opinions please: Would this rod and reel be sufficient for nearshore trolling for larger fish like mackerel or black drum? I bought 2 of this setup for inshore reds, trout and such. I was wondering if it would be ok to use once in a blue moon for larger targets, or if they were really too light duty to consider adequate. – thanks

You may want to reconsider, if trolling is what you want to do. That setup may not work too well. Most trolling rigs start with a conventional reel, not spinning. The rod you show doesn’t have a gimbal butt so it won’t lock into a rod holder. Black drum are caught on the bottom, not trolling. One inexpensive option that would do both would be a Shimano TLD 15 Combo.

Thanks for the reply… this would be from a kayak, so rod holders would be a bazooka tube or similar. I’ve got no experience with conventional reels, what makes that style better in this circumstance?

These threads go into detailed discussions over the benefits of conventional. However, if you are only using a kayak, and are more comfortable with spinning, you could make that work. You may want a larger better quality reel if you hook a smoker.

A penn jigmaster can be used in that lb test range, are cheap to find around (craigslist/flea bay) can be upgraded to no end and are very service able. Slap it on a ugly stick tiger lite jigging rod or custom live bait stick and you have a very affordable very capable setup that will last you a lifetime

Here’s one in craigslist that is a cold red color
