All the rod/reel setups I have are spinning reels. I have been thinking about getting an open-face/conventional rod/reel for occasionally fishing for something bigger (sharks, drop fishing, etc…) What is a good size reel for said fishing (line test rating). I have a friend that can “hook me up” on some Penn stuff so I was looking at one of their combo packages. Any input/■■■■■■■■ on the following would be appreciated.
PENN 320GT2 or 330GT2 Reel w/Slammer SL2050CR66 Rod or
Ugly Stik BWLB113066
Also, looking at the new PENN Battle reels. What size reel are most of you fishing inshore with, 30’s or 40’s.
Thanks.
I have a Penn International 965 that I use for carolina rig, sheepshead and BSB’s. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. The only disclaimer is trying to cast distances can be discouraging until you get it dialed in. I have it matched up w/ a Castaway heavy casting/fast action 7’ rod. One of the best rod/reel combos in the quiver.

Just bought a Penn Battle 5000 for a heavy spinning rod that Hairball built for me. That will be used primarily on jigging and heavier species nearshore and maybe pitching a bait to cudas, dolfin and cobia. Spooled it with 50lb. powerpro. For bottom bumping I have a Penn 113 on a medium heavy shimano rod spooled with 50lb powerpro.

My dad has a 320GT2 and loves it. I have a six 4/0’s and 6/0’s on Penn rods that I use for trolling and sharks, they have never let me down.
We fish with Senator 6/0s at the camp I’m working at in the Keys and we caught 7 sharks up to 9’ on them today. Those senators can handle anything. I’ve also got a 5000 Battle spooled with 275 yards of 30 lb braid and I’ve brought in up to 7 ft sharks and 5 ft tarpon on it. It’s perfect for tarpon, dolphin, tuna, cuda etc. My 3000 Battle is spooled with 15 lb braid and is perfect for inshore and lighter stuff like mackerel, sheephead, spottail, flounder, grouper, small sharks, bonefish, snook, baby tarpon etc. I’m about to pick up a 2000 Battle for trout and a 4000 battle for a liiiiiittle heavier stuff
