rod tip glue

I need to repalce a rod tip that has a chipped ceramic insert. In the past, I have not been very successful using the “proper glue stick”. Has anyone ever tried other types of glue? I was considering super glue . . . . . thoughts?

I use 2 part epoxy. You can still melt it and burn it off if needed. Rod tip glue sucks if you don’t re-wrap the guide.

All I have ever used is the glue stick on the 50 or so rods that I have built. Follow the steps below; work quickly with the glue so it stays hot.

  1. Make sure the the tip top tube size is correct for the rod. It should slip on with little or no wiggle.
  2. Melt the glue stick with a lighter and deposit a glob on the tip.
  3. Holding the tip top guide with gloves on, heat the tube for a few seconds.
  4. Reheat the glob of glue on the tip.
  5. Push the tip top on while twisting. Align and let cool
  6. Cut one side of the glob of glue that will be built up around the tip top tube with a razor knife. Peel of the glob.

Two choices: hot melt rod glue like mentioned above or 5 minute epoxy. I use 5 minute epoxy because it is stronger. If you need to change the tip top in the future it will break loose with heat from a lighter. Just don’t use regular rod making epoxy or other long-set epoxy which won’t break loose with heat. Also, be sure to clean the tip of the rod with very fine sandpaper (lightly) and wipe with acetone so the glue will stick well.
