im trying to figure out what I need to do as far as taking a couple rods with me on my trip to Canada at the end of next month… I plan on checking a bag with reels and tackle.
I was planning on carrying them on, but do I need a travel case? I’d rather not buy one as I doubt I would use it very often at all

PVC, make your own and check it… there’s a bunch of these on YouTube.

That’s what I was thinking, made some worked great , a 4 inch screwed drainage clean out cover on one end and it will last a life time.

Are you taking fly rods or spinning? What’s the smallest they break down? I might have something that you could borrow for your trip.

spinning rod. I really want to take my spheros and fish a big popper for jumbo pike or musky. plan on doing some bottom dropping for lakers as well up there.
I had someone actually already offer up theirs for me to borrow. gotta love this site, good people
it looks like I have to check it for $25 which is ok I guess. im still debating on whether just to buy a rod up there although not sure what the options will be (going to the absolute middle of nowhere)

For as much poking and prodding that goes on between fisherman in general, most here in our little Charleston fishing community would like nothing more than to help out a fellow fishing enthusiast if possible. I know I’ve been helped a ton over the last eight or nine years I’ve been reading/participating with this site. I’m glad you got something worked out.

I made one out of a heavy duty cardboard mailing tube. It works great. Different airlines have different rules on carry-on size and enforcement isn’t always the same. I know Alaska Airline is very fishermen friendly and you can carry on you rod tube. Delta on the other hand is not. If your rod doesn’t break down into 4 pieces it will be too long and they won’t let you carry on. Their extra baggage fees are also really high. I take mine to the gate and if they won’t let me carry on I gate check it to avoid the fee.
I have some extras of the tube material that I use and you’d be welcome to it. I’m in Aiken though so it would take a little bit of effort to get it to you.
Tell me… WHY are there mother****ing RODS on this PLANE!!!

You can probably ship it to your self and back cheaper than the extra baggage costs. Use the heavy cardboard tubes, lighter than PVC.
after doing the research on Delta’s policies (looked expensive, too expensive) I decided it would be best just to buy a rod when I get to Saskatoon at the Cabela’s. We are driving back so no worries on the return trip
I appreciate the help guys, hopefully one day I’ll have some info that will help yall out as well

We will never think the same about planes again!
FedEx may be better choice. Unless you’re going super remote it will probably be at your destination before you, usually cheaper than bag fees, with added bonus of no airline or TSA moron losing it or breaking it. If it’s direct flight, then maybe it evens out cost/risk/convenience to just check it with the airline and pvc it. Otherwise, just ship and insure to avoid the hassle.
Meant to say carry on reels without question.
