Hah, watching it now too, that NOAA boat got creamed. They are definitly out there, just from a few waves stacking up on each other one can get 2-3 times the average wave size occuring.

Read Overboard, Fatal Forecast and 10 Hours Until Dawn. Interesting stuff regarding waves and safety gear. These books will make you want to have an EPIRB and PLB in 406 Mhz technology.

Have any of you guys ever lost a friend to a rogue wave?
Never knew anyone lost, have definitly seen and experienced them tho. Oddball waves 2,3,4 times the size of the average wave, that and square waves, yes I said square, and yes was comletely sober. A lot of open ocean cruisers run across huge rouge waves, more so in the Southern Ocean.

That’s my point. Why be scared of rogue waves when you are much more likely to die in an automobile?
Most definitly have a better chance of a auto accident then even ever seeing a rouge wave.

I keep a surfboard on the boat in case we see a rogue wave coming and we stop right before the wave is gonnna hit and then i hop off the boat right onto the wave and see how long i can ride it. My best ride so far was 2:21 but that was back in 89’ during Hugo. Rogue waves are so common here…i just quit getting sick pits at the washout and we just troll for rogue waves…usually on saturdays. We found that January is the best month to troll for them b/c the low pressure systems that come down oppose the gulf stream and our odds are better. Some days we go 4 for 4 but other days we are lucky to just catch 1. That’s rogue trolling for you though i guess! Good times!
Talking about it gets me excited! I think I recorded a 2:32 during Hugo back in 89’. January can’t get here soon enough! Got some new spots I have been meaning to check…
