Over time I think Lee has learned up more rookies on offshore running than most. Thing that surprises me is you never hear of them “chumming” with him. He either goes too fast or they are afraid to barf upwind. I don’t have that luck. Did have a surprise a couple years ago. We were out at the GT hole with a couple of experienced guys and a rookie. 21 y/o pitcher for Wofford. We were trying to beat a weather system in a 28 Grady Sailfish. It caught us and whipped our tails. Slammed us on the way back with steep confused 6 footers. This rookie guy went into the cabin and slept all the way back. I swear he was on the cabin roof more than the bunk. Beat us to death and he never turned green. One of the pros lost a months supply of groceries.

It’s 3 days later and you are still sore from the beating you took in a 38’ boat. End of story. All because someone had to be somewhere? You missed my point altogether and went on the attack I see. I wasn’t talking down to you but you sure can throw out names at me. With your neck and back injuries maybe you should just stay inshore from now on.
Speed Kills!
I think that piece of you is getting bigger all the time in Lee’s pocket. Ima ask him to show it to me again next time I see him.
BAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!11!!
Not only have you been owned in this thread but, I think there are two more liens on you. You can’t even apply for a loan till you talk to Sells and Nikon.
Again LMAO!!

Speaking of what you can do in a ‘sportie’ I think you would have a hard time telling Paul Spencer a sport boat can’t go fast and ride nice in big seas.
Do Spencers do 64 MPH? I thought they topped out below 40 kts. But I’m sure there are some exceptions to the general rule out there. There is a fast sportfisher here and there, but high speed is not what they are made for. And I was talking about boats in the 38-foot range, Froggy, not 60 footers. We’re talking to different worlds of boats now. No comparison. Anyone would in their right mind would much rather have a 60-foot Spencer than a Fountain of any size. No offense to Fountain in that. LOL.

All I hear with that is that you are a master baiter…

He has built several with a 40+ knot cruise. Certainly not Fountain speed but like you said, there is a world of difference.

She won’t do any better than 67 MPH, and that’s with a tad of gas and one man on board, going in the right direction. Under a normal load, she maxes at 64.x MPH, and with a full fishing load and 6 men, 62 MPH is about the best she’ll do for me. She’s no slouch, but she wont’ top 70 OK that sounds more reasonable… mid 60s is what I consider very fast and also a high rate of fuel consumption. My next question would have been what kinda gas bill to get to the ledge and back… 600 plus I imagine…need big tanks for sure:wink:

Jsimpson,
She holds 400 gals. At 40 (“cruise”), she gets right at 1 MPG in calmer conditions, and anywhere from about .8 MPG to as low as .75 in rough conditions (depending on how you run it–and I can get up to 1 MPH even in rough sea, but you won’t like me for it
). The higher the fuel economy you go for in a slappy sea, the more slappy your ride will be. The calmer you go for in the ride, the more gas you’ll burn–and there can be a very big difference when you bury the tabs and trim. At top end, she gets about .65 MPG. OK, now to someone who runs a 23-footer, that may sound bad, but it’s actually pretty good for a 38-foot boat, especially considering the speed, etc. Look at the fuel efficiency rates for sportfishers, and you’ll see what I mean. I’m actually doing well there. But, you do have to pay more for the bigger ride, with all the amenities, versus a small center console, and that’s not surprising. Oh, BTW, NEVER believe the fuel economy specs published by a manufacturer. Fountain said this boat would get 1.4 MPG. While it does do pretty well for its size, speed, and what it is and does, that 1.4 is just false. It won’t do that on its best day. Maaaaaaaybe in the harbor. And that’s if everything is juuuuuust right. But you’ll never see that in the ocean on it. On an average day, I do anywhere from 180 to 220 miles and I burn from 200 to 260 gallons. Really, not bad at all, but everything is relative. You pay for what you get. That’s just a fact of life. In fact, that’s one of the biggest concerns I have had about moving up to a 48–not sure I want to pay more for gas. But, again, you pay for what you get.

in reference to this…
“Fast boats are not for everyone, but also keep in mind, like Nikon said, that the folks talking about the roughness here haven’t been out to the Gulfstream much (some never before), and there is always some exaggeration going on in a friendly sort of way. I like to take new guys offshore and helping them learn the ropes.”
…
Sorry, but Have to beg to differ just a little here…I know…Im bringing the wrath down on my head by saying that…but there isnt a whole lot of difference between taking a beating if you are a “seasoned offshore fisher” or a “rookie”
…your body will tell you when you have had enough :)…no matter what type boat youre in.
I have taken beatings on several boats offshore now…and no…not by donnie :)…and its never fun, and Sometimes it cant be helped if its “snotty” out there …all you can do is adjust as best as you can…and hope the weather and conditions get better…and in some cases unfortunately…turn around. Been there too and thats always disapointing.
As far as “Rookies” go…everyone has to start somewhere…but when it comes to such things as this I dont think some things are “exaggerated” just because they( rookies) havent been through it before… and really dont think nikon was complaining at all…just saying he didnt realize how tough conditions can be out there sometimes and the effect it had on him… ![]()
Glad ya’ll had fun and a safe trip…and am really glad that there are so many folks who will let those who have never been “out deep”,or fished have the opportunity to experience it…theres a lot of good folks on this site. Despite growing up on and around shrimp boats…I still remember my first trips offshore with our neighbor and the awe of it…laugh if you want…but thats how I felt …I felt like a kid who couldnt see enough at once…and was truly amazed by it all. …still am ![]()

Wow, Pen. I didn’t mean to strike a cord with my comment about the novices/rookies. I have nothing against rookies. I take them all the time. Love making friends. Took you green as a goard and enjoyed having you on board. Just sayin’ that people with little offshore experience don’t really have as much of a perspective of what rough, Rough, and ROUGH are, as compared to someone who’s been out in seas over 12 feet and been running to the Gulfstream for over 20 years. One guy thinks 3-4 is rough as crap. Another will go out in 5-7 (like I used to). Thursday hurt my butt cheeks on the way in, regardless, but it was nothing compared to some things I’ve been in–seriously, nothing. But, like you said, if it hurts it hurts. And I hear you loud and clear on the getting older thing. I feel the same way about my own body.
BTW, Penny, who called you on the phone and said you were “ignorant”? I certainly haven’t called or spoken to you about this and do not know who did. Can you explain that one? Because I sure don’t want you to have people thinking I called you about this.
I wouldn’t tell you you were ignorant anyway. You do have very little offhsore experience and perspective on what the ocean can be like on a 60-mile offshore trip–no offense intended, Penny–but you definitely aren’t ignorant, and there is some truth in what you said above. Going to the nearshore reefs on 1-to-2-foot-sea days is not exactly the same thing, but you are a salty fisherwoman by way of it; that’s fo sho.
You sound a little defensive or aggressive about this or something. Not sure why, but please forgive me if I have said anything wrong in this thread and accept my apologies. Maybe I’m reading you wrong. If so, please disregard. It was just a fishing report from a buddy on my boat, and as usual, since my name was in the thread, people turned it into an argument. Old. Very old. Not your fault, but no need to drag this on and on.
Take care.
