roosting

Never done any evening hunting for turkeys. What time do they fly up to roost? Sunset? 30 min. before? Have not filled the first tag yet this year so with only 1 weekend left, I plan to try to roost some after work Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday to get ready for Saturday morning. My work schedule doesn’t give me time to hunt during the week but I figure I should be able to get out there before dark and try to locate a few. What call do you guys recommend? Also, there are no fields to glass. These are all woods birds. Any tips would be appreciated

Where I hunt in the piedmont they usually fly up at sunset or shortly thereafter. I like to roost em on ridges near a creek or river. Turkeys don’t like to fly more than necessary so they will often fly from a ridge to a tree that is in a bottom so there is a shorter distance to fly. If the ridge is fairly open all the better. That way they can see predators more easily.

You should call Tom on the club. He killed three out there in like a week, which from what I hear are about the only ones killed. Call me, I’ll give you his number, man is a turkey magnet.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Mark, he was at 4 by this weekend. He is the only one to kill any turkeys at the club. He is a turkey whisperer or has a pocket full of bird food. It has been good hunting with you guys. I didn’t join back this coming season. Gonna be hunting closer to home. I was a driver this week and saw your boat. Very Nice!
