Need to cut the deck out of my 1720 keywest. Any suggestions as to what to use for this daring feat? Hopefully the stringers are ok and I don’t have to hunt for another hull. I’m thinking about using a sawsall and running it around the edge. All suggestions and idea’s will be greatly appreciated.
I replaced my deck and stringers about 5 years ago.I got alot of help from the guys at Pionneer Boats when they were in Harleyville.I was able to purchase resin, hardner and matting at their cost.I think they are now in Walterboro…You might want to go by there and ask for some pro tips, they were very helpfull.
I used a circular saw on an old glassmaster that we restored once. Set the blade to the thickness of the floor and cut away. It will leave a border about 2" wide around the edges and you can use a sawzall to trim that out and then a disc grinder and sander to smooth the rough spots on out. Make sure to wear long sleeves, safety goggles and a dust mask.
If you just blindly stick a sawzall through the floor you will likely cut stuff that doesn’t need to be cut.
That’s what I’m afraid of. Don’t want to make it any worse than it already is. Have worked with resin and glass before but it has been a long time. Don’t have a lot of money to spend so I’m trying to figure out The least expensive way to do the floor. Having to sell a couple of things that I really don’t want to part with but need to do something with the boat.
I would in your money situation do the following.Buy several cans of the foam crack sealer stuff.Drill a small hole and fill all the voids possible with that filler. When the floor is stable fill the drill holes.
Good idea Stonoman but I think upon expansion it will just push the deck up. Russ B said I could use some CDX plywood and resin all sides then glass the top. I just didn’t know the best way to cut it out and am concerned about the stringers. Have access to boats for runnin rivers and creeks. This was our harbor/jetties boat with a once in awhile well planned trip to R8 or 4ki.
