Rough Report 5/1

Well we put our first trip of the season on the boat. Headed out of Waphoo at 5:00 am 30 min late start no biggie. Got to the end of the Jetties and it seemed like the ocean hated us. Best I could do was 20 to 23 mph. All the way out we were just kicked around and beaten to a pulp. 3.5 hours later we deployed the spread 5 miles from the banks. I usually run a 5 line spread. I could never get more than 3 lines out before a reel went singing. We had 3 dolphin in the box in the first 30 min. We kept at it. With the three of us getting sick several times. We had some gaff issues and on issue of some bad driving that tangled our spread. We ended the day with 7 dolphin all good sized in the boat 2 lost at the side and easily that many that we missed in strikes. We had a triple knockdown (and mind you I only had 3 lines out) and a few doubles. We were fishing 72 to 73 degree water and the Lehi green and yellow was the hot one. It was a great day for the fish and a horrible day for the ocean. Its going to take some time to recover from that trip we should have turned around cause in a 22 foot boat it was not fun but I think the fish bug had us.

you guys went out in a 22fter yesterday…bet your balls hurt today

I figured the EB would be hot. Glad you found the fish.

I will not get into a battle of wits with a man who is completely unarmed!

We tried to call you guys on the radio to see how you were doing. I know it was tough for you guys in a 22ft. We were getting tossed in a 34ft. That was a sportfisher boat day lol! Glad you caught fish and made it back.

Shoulda been in the 20’r with us out at the 226! We saw all you big guys rockin as we were getting our butts kicked.

It was bad I am not gonna lie. I saw that the wind was up but thought it would be ok. Well it wasent my a$$ is feels like someone had a towel party on it. I think I might have to take a few weeks to recover. I have to say the boat (Scout 222 sportfish) took it but it had to be about the limit of what it could take. After that trip I definately felt like a boat upgrade is on the horizon. Good news is that I only burned 53 gallons of gas. No if I can find a smooth day and teach my crew the are of gaffing we would be set. Glad you all made it out and back the fish are blowing up out there right now for sure!

Ill let you all know the next time we make an attempt.

“towel party on it”…now thats funny…have never heard it put that way…glad everyone made it in safe and caught fish

I was thinking the same thing… not just because it is a Scout… beatings like that take their toll on boats, bodies, and spirits… glad you got back ok… learning the hard way is better than not learning at all…

Polly Wanna…

got caught in a similar situation last year, bought a bigger boat this year. would have still been rough but i would have flet better in this bigger boat. Great to hear you still caught some fish and made it home safe.
Only issue now is i own two boats, the guy that was buying my 225 backed out as he was not ready to upgrade.
Now I have a 2800WA Hydra-Sports and a Keywest 225… need to sell the key west…
