Trying to help someone think about fuel economy and the costs. I realize load, sea conditions, where exactly you are going, etc. will have impact on the above.
It all depends on where the fish are biting, last few bottom trips we have run around 140 miles round trip. Its about 60 miles to the grouper numbers i like then we usually go to a spot thats about ten miles inshore. Last trip we ran out at 30 in rough seas and ran in at 45-50 on a calm ocean. I think we burnt about $300.00 in fuel and another $200 in bait. I like fishing deep, I have much better luck getting a limit of big grouper then I would inside the ledge. The total mileage and fuel burn trolling all day should be higher. This is on a 27foot cc with twin 250s
Two trips to the stream we burned 57 and 62 gallons of fuel and $200 and $230 in the bill. Most bottom fishing has been around 45-50 gallons of fuel and between $150-$175.00 in cost.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I have ran 225-240 miles several times(total mileage counting the troll). It’s 14 miles to the jetties one way in Gtown so that adds 28 miles per trip to total. Most trolling trips are 160-180 miles. Bottom fishing is at least 70-80 miles and usually 110+
So next questions, which I realize have even more variables, are:
So a low to mid-30’s size CC that can run something like twin F300’s lets say, whats the real world avg fuel burn off shore? I am guessing its 1.25-1.5 MPG at decent cruise in decent seas. So let’s say 200 miles = 150 gallons x $4.5 = $666 in fuel. So almost $1,000 day with bait, food, ice, etc.
How about an even bigger CC with something like triple F300’s? I am guessing its closer to 1-1.25MPG. 200 miles closer to 200 Gallons x $4.5 = $1,000 in fuel. So $1300 day all in.
Those close enough to think about how many guys you want to split that with and whats the cost per person?
Spend your $$ now while ya can.
Take your kids out & teach them everything ya know.
Check out with a zero balance.
You earned it, you spend it, you enjoy it.

Those numbers are close enough. 5 to 6 guys $150 to $200 per person a day when it is all said and done. Most trolling trips are 12 to 14 hours on the water. Average recreational guy fishes less than ten of these types of trips a year. If you are not footing the boat bill it is a $2k a year habit. Not to bad considering.
My wife spends way more than that shopping…
X2 to what Dave said!
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!
S4G- trick then is when you live in the upstate like we do and then you have to factor in:
Driving back and forth
where to stay
Can’t get 5 or6 guys, you only got 3 and one of them is the boat owner so you hate to have him splitting costs too
Prepping before the trip then clean up after
Doing all the above then clearing the jetties and its worse seas than they said it would be
Not suggesting its not worth it but you gotta know what you are getting into right? Its a lot more than just money…and of course its a lot more than just catching fish!
I live in UP, UP state (NC) and the trick is to watch the weather several days prior with emphasis on the day of, keep your mouth shut on the interweb about weather forecasts, and just be ready to jump in the truck and go. Mother nature does not give a **** what your plans are so you have to plan according to HER plan. Tricky part is SHE is the only one who knows her plan but the weather man likes to pretend he knows.

I run a 33ft with trip 250s. I use around 150-170 gal for a typical trip fishing 250-300ft, more or less depending on how fast we run and how deep we go. Out of Edisto we dont have a run down the waterway which helps. Hard for me to get better than 1mpg on plane. Hope this helps.

A lot depends on seas. We have fished Edisto banks(triple 300?s), then ran around the beach wide open and still only burnt 150 gallons. We have also fished the banks pre-fishing a tournament, water breaking the side trolling, fished for 2 hours and came home and burnt 230 gallons.
Average trip is 180-200gl and thats refusing to dead troll, either we are on it or we move. Burnt 325 gal one time, not sure of distance but we were 99 miles from the house at one point.
