Just got a 9’ 8#, 3pc. Only cast it a few times and was favorably impressed. I know they discontinued this line a few years ago but it seems like a solid rod. Anybody throw one of these things?
It is a fly rod like an old anything. Not bad if you like it but if your Father did not own it, the move up to new stuff. I sold my RPLX and other Sage rods years ago .

I hear 'ya. Unfortunately cost prohibits that crucial upward move. I like it better than the winston so I’ll stick with it for awhile. You gave up on Sage? What are you throwing these days?
TB, which winston did you have?

Have a XiII that I love. Also bought a 4wt xp for trout in tight NC creeks. Those two have sold me on the Sages

Upgrading isn’t always netter. I have a “legacy” Loomis GLX 4 pc 8 wt. They are no longer made in 4 pc. When I broke the tip top guide, I tried to get the factory to replace it. The large loop guide for such a small blank diameter is very hard to find. Instead of replacing the guide, they tried to get me to “upgrade” to the newer “Crosscurrent” version, which is made in 4 pc. I finally found an adequate guide for the old rod and when I tried casting the old rod side by side with the newer, I decided to send the brand new one back. The blank on the new rod was noticably heavier and not quite as fast.
The ordeal did convince me to upgrade the guides on my old blank to the newer nickel/titanium guides they use on the Crosscurrent though. Instead of relatively fragile ceramic insert guides, these new guides are practically indestructable. That’s a good feature on any rod you plan to travel with. It’s a drag when you have to use a backup rod on a once in a lifetime bonefish trip because of a broken guide insert.

Tonight we play for blood (insert heavy mexican accent) Have you hit the pit pond yet? Any topwater fly action? Is the XI II the same as the rplx?
TB
have not made it to the pit in a while. TH has done pretty well over there though. I had a great may and early june on the tailers with eight OTF and got the wife her first tailer on a DOA. she is gonna have to fight for the next one though, because I can only be unselfish once. Have not done much lately. how bout you? saw you on JI last week in the rain with Lando sitting on the tool box. Nice.
To be honest I am not familiar with the RPLX. I think that the Xi II took the place of the old XP model that they discontinued.

How do you like that GLX? I have an 8 weight 4 pc and I have always felt like it was way too slow for saltwater flats fishing.
I use GLoomis and Scierra fly rods now. THe GLoomis rods are fast and require precise handling in order to cast well, the Scierra rods are slower and forgiving. I can rotate the rods based on the fishing and casting conditions.
I got to stick with my Thomas & Thomas Horizon II’s. I have cast a lot of rods, and just can’t find anything that beats those rods when it comes to my casting style. I can cast right into the backing with em.

9’, 9#, 2 pc. rplxi here and happy with it!!</font id=“blue”>
rivers,
A GLX too slow??? I’ve never heard anyone say that about them. Most folks say they are too fast for beginners.
I love mine. It distressed me when they stopped making them in 4 pc. Now I’m scared I’ll break it and not be able to replace it. If you aren’t using yours, put a price on it and let me know.

Nice. Mine is a three piece. I imagine the two is a little stiffer.

I have been throwing the TFO rods since they were just a small company in texas maybe seven years ago. They are great rods especially for the money!! They are a little heavy which makes the big rods a little hard to throw all day but if you think about it, it makes you a better fly caster because then when you throw a lighter rod it will seem effortless. I met lefty Kreh at a fishing expo in atlanta few months ago, he is a legend and helps TFO design as of a few years ago. If he will put his name on them then they are good enough for me.

That makes sense.
The TiCr x is pretty light if you ask me.Beside my sage and scott it still seems rather light and throws quite well for a 7wt.Still in love with my sage though:smiley:

My backup 8 wt is a TFO. I think they’re about the most rod for the money out there. Very well made and surprisingly affordable.

I would be interested in what number is on the the bottom of your GLX. Mine says FR 1088-4, which is described on their web site as a medium-stiff rod. I have had a lot of good times with mine, but whenever I really needed to haul it for some speed, it would flex way to far down the rod and lose power. is this the same model number as yours? just curious
rivers,
I’ll look when I get home and post. If memory serves me correctly, mine is a GLX FR-1088-4. I’ll let you know.
