Can you eat Rudderfish? Thought it was a baby amberjack but was told it was a Rudderfish and was wanting to know if anyone has ever eaten one.
I’ve heard they are good eating, but I’ve heard the same thing about amberjack. Never filleted one, but the worms that pop out of a fresh AJ fillet are enough for me not to want to.

“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”
Most small jacks are delicious including Banded Rudderfish.
Cooked it last night it wasn’t as good as the mahi but I would keep another one!!!
I would rather have mahi than jack as well. I’d take a triggerfish over either of them and never pass on hog snapper.
When I ran the Thunderstar, Rudders were one of our staple fish i would target when the b-liner bite was slow. Easy to catch and filled up the stringers. 99% of them do not have worms. Corn meal and grease… Not bad eating, but of course there are many better eating fish in the sea. Good fish to “make friends with”…
Didn’t know you ran the Thunderstar, didn’t Tom from Chas Scuba also run that boat? I remember talking to him on the VHF during the long night of Hugo.
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
Not that I know of. Hugo would have been way before my time on the boat. I worked there from 2001 until the fishing regs, whale rule, and fuel prices put us out of business in 2009. I worked my way from cutting squid to eventually running the boat in 2006.
I went out on that boat many times as a kid. Many fond memories
