Any Yammy pros out there?
I have a 2013 Yam 150 4 stroke on my KW.
I flush the engine after every use with the direct hose connection.
Question is, should I be running the engine during the flush period or not?

When using the direct flush absolutely not . It clearly states that in the manual if I remember correctly . But I believe if you still want to use the old earmuffs way its ok but not recommended .
Absolutely do not run the engine with the hose connection. And it also states in the maual to not flush these new 4-strokes on the muffs either.
Do not run that motor on a flush. You probley tried running it on the ear muffs with no sucess. The larger Yamaha motors do not like the ear muffs. If you feel the need to run your motor to flush it you will need to get a trash can and run it that way. But dont let the pea water back into the can because it wont take long to overheat the motor.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
Thanks everyone. The consensus is “No! Do not run the engine when flushing”
Ok, next question: Is that ‘salt away’ engine product worth it? H

What about with the volvo inboard/outboards? I’m assuming it may mess with the impellers?

I had a regal with a Volvo and ran it on ear muffs all the time. Never had a problem.

don’t run the engine on the direct flush adapter, but there is nothing wrong with using a flush adapter to run the engine
it does a much better job of flushing the motor than using the flush adapter.
the engine gets warm and the thermostat opens and get a much more complete flush
some motors have a low water pick up that needs to be addressed, but the f150 isn’t one of them
There is also a big thread on THT about flushing with vinegar. Has full instructions and results.

www.joinrfa.orgChris, I have a 2003 115 4 stroke. What is the best way to flush it? Been using the earmuffs… yikes.
Earmuffs are the best

use the flush adapter on the engine to run the engine, do not use ear muffs on a Yamaha. Its easy to burn up an impeller on a Yamaha using ear muffs. I run on average 15 to 20 Yamaha engines on the flush adapter each week with no issues. I used to use ear muffs as that was what I was used to on Mercury’s. I burned up two water pumps using ear muffs(sucked air from drain back holes and never got any water to the impeller). The first time i went to Yamaha school, I specifically asked about using the flush adapter when running the engine. The Yamaha instructor told me that it was the preferred method. The only engine they recommend to not use the flush adapter on was the HPDI engines, on those they recommended using both the flush adapter and the ear muffs together to insure enough water was going to the powerhead. And yes, running the engine does do a better flush, it allows the thermostat to open and flush the entire cooling system. That means it takes longer than the 15 seconds I see most people spend flushing their engine. If you are bound and determined to use a flush muff, use the Mercury one that has the wire going thru the water pickups, you will have to remove the water pickups on a Yamaha to use it though. Be care full using a bucket to run engine, make sure its big enough and keep a hose running into the bucket to keep the water cool.
I just pulled up the owners manual for a F150, it says to not run the engine on the direct fluahing attachment. Its your motor, you need to err on the side of caution, I’ll keep doing it the way it works for me and my customers boats. One thing I do pay attention to is I check to see if water comes out of the water pickups when I turn the hose one with the direct flushing attachment before I start the engine. If I see water coming out of the pickups, I’m good to start the engine
On the Volvo engines, use the flush adapter inside the engine compartment, it usually has a blue screw in plug on the hose fitting, make sure the o-ring on that plug is in good shape and tighten it securely after using it.

Help
what is the “direct flush adapter” ? the oem water hose connector?
and what is the “flush adapter” the muffs for the foot??
I spoke with my sales guy at Butler who said he spoke to the Yamaha rep who said not to run the engine with the direct adapter flush. So, I’m not running it during the flush.

to flush the cooling system they show a cartoon with the “flushing attachment” ears, say flush at fast idle 15 min
sorry I made that about as clear as mud
the direct flush is the thing below the cowling you screw the water hose to
the flush adapter would be ear muffs
using earmuffs to run the motor is the best way to flush
