after having my fuel system flushed and changing the water seperator (where i thought rust was coming from) i found out that something in my fuel tank is rusting. what steps do i need to take to make sure i get all rust and residue out of the tank? or is the tank just trashed? it is a fiberglass tank.
Is it rust or black sludge?

im guessing it is rust. after it sits for about 2 weeks the inside of my fuel/water seperator is completely rusted. brand new one and another two weeks same thing happens. talked to a mechanic on the phone and he thought something inside the tank was rusted.
Bad fuel can turn orange and look like rust. Very unlikely that you have enough ferrous material in a tank to do that as most tanks are aluminum or plastic.

I used E10 gas for about a month and had the same thing happen. I got about 1/2 gallon of orange rusty looking water out of the tank. Pretty sure it was phase separation. Ran the tank dry and went back to E-free gas and never had that problem again. That was over a year ago and the clear bowl on my separator still has an orange tinge to it. For the extra 20 cents per gallon E-free costs in Lexington, I’ll never use E10. And I did use Startron and Starbil

are you sure its fiberglass and not plastic?
if its fiberglass, you need to get rid of yesterday.
if its plastic, it should be cleanable, but you need to get a camera inside to check it out
