I have a large wood turning lathe. The bed (rail that the tailstock and rest sit on) is bare metal. It is bare by design as any paint would be scrapped off moving the tailstock/rest. The problem I am having is keeping light rust off of the bed. Does anyone have an idea/product I can use to keep the bed from rusting?
Thanks

I am sure their are many products out there worth trying. But a pretty cool product to try would be Hornady One Shot with Dynaglide lubricant. It’s used for reloading ammo, and it coats the dies and brass and keeps it from sticking. I would think it would prevent corrosion as well. I spray it on the ram of my press as well as it is bare metal and it kinds of sticky from powder residue over time. It hasn’t rusted yet.
It is a wet spray that dries. You are left with a kind of dry lubricate instead of wet oily residue to gather shavings and dirt. It feels almost waxy after it dries.
It also dries quickly as all it takes is the alcohol to evaporate to be usable. A can is pretty cheap and you can spray it down every so often.
Thanks for all the info. The problem with anything oily is that it gums up the bed (especially when combined with wood dust)and it makes it hard to move the tailstock and the tool rest. Some of the products mentioned sound like they may work. I’ll do some trial and error.

I like to use Bostik topcote on all my cast iron table tops. It is an aerosol and dries dry and slick. You can get it at any woodworking supplier like Woodcraft or Woodworkers Supply
