Rusty Trailer Springs

My trailer is 5 years old. The springs are looking very rusty. I am talking large flakes. There appears to be plenty of metal remaining, but I am not sure how long I should trust them.

How long should they last? Is there any kind of treatment … rust prevention, oil or paint that I should be using?

hit them with a heavy hammer and knock off all the rust, then paint them with rustoleum and get a few more years out of them.

it doesn’t take much trailer to hold a 14 stinger.

I replaces mine 2 years ago and before I installed them, I sprayed them with rubber undercoating. They still look really good.

Mine are 8 years old, original, and I fish 95% salt. Garage kept. I’ll probably replace them this winter. They look horrible too. I like Bad Habit’s suggestion if hitting with hammer. I’d also put a long-bristled wire brush on them before painting.
