Alarm went of at 3:45am, I donned my lucky fishing shirt and headed down stairs to check the weather one last time before leaving the upstate for Charleston. 25knot out of the west seas 5 feet at 4 seconds… This may get interesting… But all the forecasts were holding so I fired up the fish truck and headed south east
Got a call at 5 from Holton, I hope you are back in bed! I laughed figuring he looked at the weather. Said it was 4.5 at 7 seconds. Hell it is calming down! Lets go! Got to his house and loaded my stuff into the boat and we headed to Charleston. Met a rough looking bunch at the landing. They were led by a large caveman looking fellow known to the locals as Sellsfish. He was signing autographs and talking about his brush with stardom as we loaded the boat. Then almost as quickly as Dr. David Banners eyes turned green he transformed in to a slicker draped mad man, we were going to kill some fish today.
Plan was to take challenge of targeting the elusive black sea bass. Hoped to have alittle by catch of triggers and pinks but sea bass was the target. The seven of us passed Fort Sumter at 9am and were greeted with a beautiful ocean. So much for the 5x4s she had laid down nice force. We pushed the throttles down and headed a DNR posted artificial wreck.
Got there and found a Key West sitting on the spot. Words were exchanged, trash talking performed, and they let us pull right up to them.

Sells has a good friend in the resturant business that uses them for a dish he makes. I hear they are very good when properly prepared. Sells was just trying to help a friend out.
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!
Great job on the BSB. S4G your warning should be required on all catching reports in the future. We pulled the plug on our trip Saturday night based on the weather reports and regretted it all day Sunday.
Before we left, we checked the buoy also, and it did not look too good at all for my little boat, but we had to at least poke our heads out and see. I’m glad we did!!
They could raise the c-bass limit to 30, and I don’t think us rec fishermen would put a dent in the fishery. It is frustrating that even at 120’ we couldn’t get away from them to catch anything else!!

Good to sea you out there as well. You are welcome to ride with us anytime. We were full on Sunday but most days we have an extra spot. How was your ride in?

The ride in became a little bumpy and wet thanks to the SW wind. But that is pretty usual for my little bote. If you’re gonna fish on the Miss Amanda, you must have foul wx gear!!
I love offshore fishing, so I can live with being a little uncomfortable. I have to work with what I have…

Nice haul. …others watching for birds & bait…zzzzz!
We need a web cam on the Charleston 60 buoy to catch the nice days that are otherwise forecasted as too nasty.

10-4…Sells is there much difference to them meat and texture wise over BSB? There are plenty of fish we call trash fish that are probably good table fare…
Funny how draconian management makes people do things they wouldn’t normally, and then they’re attacked on here like they’ve surely been abusing the resource for ages and this reckless activity must be stopped at all costs.
If they didn’t care about the law, why would they be derby fishing here and posting about it proudly?
If it wasn’t for the closure and their knowledge of the true health of the fishery, this report wouldn’t show what it does.
Kinda like how we would have never fished in what is now the MPA 3 or 4 times in a row one month and kept as many scamp grouper as we could. Under normal circumstances, folks would not crush one 1 mile long ridge that way because they’d know the fish would take years to come back strongly.
Throw in overregulation, and you get abnormal reaction.
Keep up with the overregulation, however, and you will naturally end up with everyone who goes fishing being criminals. That is the ironic thing…
Then we’re back to that tragedy of the commons thing.

Anybody who is willing to take 40 head offshore so the gas bill is 8 bucks ain’t throwing nuttin back.
I will save a bag of fillets for you. Maybe some sweet sea bass would get that sour taste out of your mouth from the last couple weeks.
Go out and play in the traffic for a bit. Try to burn off some of that steam.
And for the record it was not about money on Sunday, it was about getting as many fisherman as I could in the boat to enjoy our last chance to fish for 2 months.
Maybe you should have gone too.
