Someone brought it up last week and I happened to catch one of these nasty guys this weekend, so I thought I’d snap a picture of how we release them, fish unharmed and human unharmed.
This is obviously from a boat and once the fish is turned upside down, his ability to move and thrash about is greatly dimenished. Its certainly still possible though, don’t let your guard down. You don’t need gloves if you use common sense. No teeth in the mouth, but pliers might be needed due to how tough they are.

I do the same thing, but I get them with the gaff first, break the stinger off with pliers, and throw them on ice. The small ones are awesome shark bait, so I always keep them.

they should all die…just like snakes…they are the devil and killed Steve Irwin
I was way back in Clark Sound after launching from Folly River and my buddy catches one. Get’s it in the net and it’s squirming around and sticks him deep in the forearm, and man it got him deep. He pulls it off of his arm and tries to sling it out of the boat and it gets him in the upper thigh. About 2 minutes later, he is laying in the fetal position on the deck while I’m hauling back to the landing, which was a pretty good run from where we were. Made him super sick.
I am not an advocate of wanton slaughter of God’s creatures just because I feel like it, but they can be one pain in the butt sometimes.
Narcosis
Recently I have been taking Stingrays and cutting them in fourths.
I’m then able to wrap a mud minnow with the skin, kind of like a hot dog…this has helped me catch many fish on Ashley River.

A stingray can lay in the “fetal” position…I have heard it all now
Why would you kill a stingray or a snake just for the heck of it? It’s not like they’re an invasive species who are harming the environment. I’m not a tree hugger by any means, but killing just to kill is juvenile.

If you get hit by a Stingray…apply heat…as warm as you can stand and it will take the pain away.
I can confirm this:smiley:!

Years ago I learned that heat, specifically hot water, would help for pain from a stingray sting. I got stung by one in Florida, about 30 yrs. ago, while trying to get the hook out. I’d done it a hundred times, using the same technique as 23sailfish described. This guy was a baby, couldn’t have been as big as a small dinner plate, maybe 8" across the wings. Any way, the little sucker flipped his little baby tail, with its needle sized stinger, and nailed me, right in the end of my left pinkie finger. I immediately cut the line, and squeezed a bunch of clear jelly-like poison out of the finger. The sharp pain in my finger was bad enough, but it started moving up my arm. I started to get shock symptoms by the time we got to the ramp. Got home, (luckily we were only 10 minutes away), I put my finger under the hot tap in the kitchen. It helped right away. My wife at the time put a pot of water on the stove to heat up. I soaked my hand in the hottest water I could stand for about an hour before the pain really started to subside. It took awhile for it to heal, because like a spider or snake bite, it decayed from the inside.
Sorry for the long read, but I just wanted to say that no matter how small they are, they can still pack a hellofa punch. I still try to get the hooks out, and I still don’t cut their tails off, unless I absolutely have to. If you use them for sharks, go ahead and cut them off. But to cut them off just because you can, is just plain cruel.

There’s always the option of just cutting off the “stinger” at the base. This will not injure the ray and the stinger will grow back. There’s really no reason to kill the stingray or to cut off its tail.

By the way, I was bitten by a Timber Rattler a few years ago on my left pointer finger and the pain from the stingray was much worse.
Me too! I’ve been bitten by both a timber rattler and a copperhead, and had a few pops from rays. The rays hurt worse and last longer than the snake bites. And those little SOBs are the ones that will get you. Same with snakes for that matter, and catfish. Watch out for the little guys!
