So I just pulled my kayak out of the shed after being there for over a year (just got back from Afghanistan about 3 weeks ago) and noticed that my whistle was missing and one of my handles was broken. I decided to go out and replace then, and was wondering if there was anything else I needed before hitting the water again. Anyone know the state safety equipment requirements for kayaks? I have my vest already. I know I need a whistle. Anything else I need? Also stuff that is recommended? Thanks in advance.

PFD and safety whistle, and I don’t know about everyone else but I like to keep on fishing if the sun is going down or really early morning if the fish are biting so a reflective flag is a good choice too, even a few strips of reflective tape can go a long way.
You’ll need a light at night. The YakAttack Visicarbon is a great for the light, also has a reflector on the mast plus a safety flag for the day.
I wear my PFD all the time…I have an inflatable which is very light and even comfortable to wear during the summer.
