Safety equipment requirements

So I was out yesterday and the wind was whipping white caps in the creek. I was humping it out to paddle into the winds and waves when a boat came by and threw a rather large wake that near flipped me. I found myself thinking about what I would do if indeed I rolled. I’m a good swimmer but fully clothed with fishing boots on is no way to start your morning swim!
What safety equipment do you guys take with you? What are we required to have? I have a life jacket but it’s crammed behind my seat and I sit on a floatation cushion. I also have a whistle in the tackle box but like the vest, I’m not sure it’s easily accessible.

You are required to have a life jacket and a whistle with you at all times. Life jacket has to be a certain class. I’m not sure which one but i know a crappy orange one is not legal for a kayak. Tie your whistle onto your life jacket that way you have easy access to it. Mine always sits in the storage are in the back of the yak mushed between my cooler. I wont take mine out if its blowing 10+, its just not fun when its that much work. Other than that make sure you got everything strapped down or make sure it floats. Don’t want your $100+ rod/reel setup hitting the drink.

All fishermen are liers except me and you and I’m not sure about you.
