SAFMC Amendment 22 to increase gag to 3/person/day from 1/person/day.

Looks like real good news to me.

3 gags per day is effectively “no limit” for most people. 2 gags per day is completely achievable on rod and reel and it feels good to get your “limit”. Plus, you had a ton of grouper in the box! That’s my non-scientific view on things for which common sense should prevail, but unfortunately, science and common sense seem to be at odds in fishery management most of the time. My vote would to be just set it back at 2. I don’t think anyone felt robbed by a 2 per person limit in the past. I don’t see the point of setting it to 3 so that we just end up with some sort of emergency closure 10 years from now.

They also want to keep justification for the seasonal shallow water grouper closure. Scamp were never in trouble. Red grouper and gag grouper are what they must play with now in an effort to move towards their area closure and catch share agendas…
