FYI, there will be a SAFMC meeting held September 11-15th in Charleston, SC. This will be at the TOWN & COUNTRY INN located at 2008 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407. The entire week long meeting is open to the public, however, there is a “public comment” session that will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30PM.
Put this on your calendar now!
Please exercise your right as a recreational angler to attend and let SAFMC know your feelings on any issues regarding our fishery.

Thanks for posting! I look forward to seeing you there. We need a large crowd to show and discuss the need for more reefs as well as many other issues that will be on the agenda
When I asked about a question and answer period during this meeting, this was the response I got:
Hello Ricky,
I wanted to introduce myself and add a bit to your question about public comment and questions. As Cameron noted, you may ask a question of the Council members during public comment. Council members may have questions for you as well. However, the purpose of public comment is to allow you and other members of the public to share your opinions and recommendations on management measures under consideration by the Council and any other items on the Council meeting agenda. The public comment period is not designed as a Q&A session nor is it a time for debate.
I always encourage folks to introduce themselves and provide a little background information about themselves and their experience when addressing Council members - then provide comments and hopefully recommendations based on the materials that are being covered at the meeting.
The amount of time allowed for each person to address the Council during the public comment session is based on the number of people signed up for public comment at the Council meeting. As you can imagine, if a large number of people wish to address the Council it could take quite awhile if everyone is allowed an unlimited amount of time to speak. It is always helpful to keep your comments and recommendations focused and to the point.
As Cameron also noted, we will be more than happy to help address any questions you may have prior to the meeting You may also contact Council members individually to talk with them about any concerns or questions. Each state has a recreational and commercial representative as well as a state fisheries agency representative. Voting members also include the Regional Administrator for NOAA Fisheries, Dr. Crabtree. Contact information and background information for Council members is available from the website at: http://safmc.net/council-members/.
Another opportunity to provide your comments to the Council prior to each me

so are us sheep just expected to show up and be told what we should do? maybe I missed something, but I don’t understand the point of a public comment period if you can’t ask a (**() question or debate what they are proposing…

Its looking pretty pointless to comment to the SAFMC. At the recent Florida meeting , with 99.9% of public comments against limiting grouper snapper for hire licenses , the council voted to push the proposal forward.
Ask them how much the commercial guys are paying them to preserve their interests, and why we are grouped with Florida when clearly it’s a different fishery.

A little public discourse can’t hurt. I’m down on the west coast of Florida right now. A friend of mine down here told me that initially they were given June 1 - 3 for Red Snapper fishing. So much hell was raised that they amended that and now get every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from June until Labor Day. Still only get 2 fish per but, at least they’re getting a season. A lot of people showing up proclaiming their displeasure has to be better than no one showing up. I realize as an inshore guy I don’t have as much at stake as you offshore guys but, this is us against them so.
