SAFMC Visioning Project Meeting?

Is anyone planning to attend the SAFMC Visioning Project scoping meeting in Myrtle Beach on Jan. 21?

Is anyone interested in having a discussion on here about the project before that meeting?

Is anyone interested in discussing how we can quickly and easily get back tons of our Gag Grouper quota that is being allocated to dead discards?

Can you post the details (time and location) and maybe an agenda? I don’t think a lot of people know about it. I did not.

The council is not doing a very good job of getting the word out. Here is a link with the schedule. http://safmc.net/meetings/public-hearing-and-scoping-meeting-schedule#ph3

Just so you know there will be one here in Charleston in February and because I am on the S/G AP I will be part of that visioning project. I am meeting with SAFMC staff next week to finalize the details of when and where. I do know it will be somewhere around the second week, but I will post the details when I have them!

capt.markbrown, John Carmichael told me the discard mortality rate used for Gag Grouper in stock assessments and projected dead discard allocations could be reduced in the new assessment based on the circle hook mandate that was not in place during the last one if the AP and SAFMC guided him to do so. Please offer such guidance to the council and Mr. Carmichael. Please also encourage the council to use the 27,218 pounds of our commercial Gag Grouper quota that was recently allocated to Post Closure Discard Mortality for a 50 pound Post Closure By-catch Allowance.

Does anyone else support these solutions? If not, why? Remember, silence equals passive support for the status quo. Evidence fishermen are releasing Gag Grouper suffering from barotrauma with decent assist devices could result in further reductions in discard mortality rates.

Chris you can call me or email me anytime about things like this and I will take this to the SG AP. Anything like this that will help to make a difference in the final outcome of ANY assessment I am all about, and willing to bringing up for discussion. Thanks!

Thanks Mark. When is the next SG AP meeting? The SAFMC website only has last year’s info.

Does anyone else on here think that reducing the discard mortality rates used in stock assessments based on the new circle hook law we are following would be a good thing?

This meeting is not about the Visioning Project. It is a public hearing about Amendment 29 and Framework Amendment 1. It is also a Public Scoping meeting for Amendments 16, 24, and 26. Sorry for the mistake. This gives us a little more time to discuss solutions we would like to see in the Visioning Project. A coordinated message will have much more impact than if everyone submitting public comments says something different.

FYI …
SAFMC Port “Visioning” meetings throughout the southeast will begin in February!

Thanks for the update Captain Mark. Is anyone planning to attend one of these meetings? Is anyone interested in having a discussion to coordinate our message so the council will listen to us? If we all say something different, the NGOs will have enough coordination to advance their agenda in this process.
