So, my Winter 2012 SAFMC newsletter showed up this weekend. On the very front page, it talks about the red snapper closing and actually says this:
“A new stock assessment in 2010 indicated that the area closure was not necessary, but the red snapper fishery remains closed as the stock continues to rebuild.”

The whole newsletter seemed to be a glowing account of how fishing was being curtailed. Front to back restrictions. Still don’t understand why commercial sea bass can be smaller than recreational, not that 12 or 13 is worth bragging about mind you.
They were going to shut down 9500 square miles to fishing for 72 species. Instead only ars are closed.
They sandbagged big time on the reassessment. One day they will reopen, but not anytime soon. Too much embarrassment on them if they did right before enough time goes by for them to announce that a miraculous recovery has occurred.
Happened with red grouper in the gulf… So it can happen. Don’t hold your breath though
