Sail in 55 ft.

Out on Hoyz Boyz (new to me 1986 Seacraft 23) tuesday with Captain Phelps, Captain Glasser and buddy David Aherne. Thunderstorms, lightening and 4 separate water spouts nixed our plans to head north. Turned around to Chas 60. Not much there so pushed on out to Y73. Interesting mixed bag of albacore, barracuda, 2 AJs, 2 undersized cobia, the latter of which was tailing a 10-12 foot tiger shark. Shark was enticed to eat a big chunk of Albie for a brief fight won by the man in the striped suit. Cool to see him eat right off the transom. Packed it up for 25 mile ride home about 2pm. Some time later, I was semi-asleep in bean bag when boat came off plane and everyone screaming “sailfish, sailfish! Get a rod!!!” Thought maybe I was dreaming but Captain Phelps came flying out of the helm and jumped over me to get to the rods that were pretty much packed up for ride home.
Sure enough, good sized sail with fin out of water sunning itself less than 100 ft from boat. Mad scramble to get a rod set up with something on it to throw at fish. By this point in day, bait well had dead menhaden and dead mullet. Menhaden with rigor mortis was first to fly and fish wanted nothing to do with it, but happily stayed 30 feet off boat. Next to go was dead (but at least alive looking) mullet. Capt. Mark put it right in front of fish, I threw one perfectly behind him. Few cranks and a twitch and fish inhaled Mark’s bait with all of us watching jaws agape. Solid hook up (circle hook) as fished turned perfectly away and started with the acrobatics. Great show with multiple jumps very close to boat then long run out. Got him back to boat and touched leader to make official and fish ran again. Back to boat for few quick pics, de-hooking and revival. Swam away strong to fight another day.
We all knew we were awful close to home but couldn’t believe it when we saw we were in 55 ft of water with the outline of Wild Dunes seen on the horizon. Literally 5 or 6 miles from Deweese inlet. Unbelievable. Have heard of sails in close, but never expecte

Sounds like a great experience – definitely an enjoyable read! Can’t wait to see some pictures. Great job!
