The 140’s are probably the same weight as the 90 Hondas and def lighter than the 130 Hondas…the extra HP gets the bow up which makes all the difference in a following sea…fixning to go test it…

Dustoff, Why are you so critical of these young fellas? Looks like they had some success in a very small boat offshore. I congratulate them and wish them many more. Quite frankly I dont give a ■■■■ about them taking the sail out of the water. Thats between them and mother nature to figure out where the chips fall. The fact that they are back on land and posting pretty much speaks for itself that they are/were safe and smart. go back to telling fish stories at Capn D’s and quit give a young kids a hard time. You are ooziing bad kharma with your negativity.
Look, to me, the sailfish issue is small potatoes compared to the small boat issue. This whole “pick yer days” debate has been hashed out before. I’m just amazed that some of y’all really think it’s OK to head offshore in little more than a jonboat b/c the weather is good when you leave the dock and the weatherman says it’s going to stay that way. Those guys in the picture look young, and I’d venture a guess that not one of them has been caught in a thunderstorm thirty miles off the beach. If they have, that makes their decision all the more perplexing.
I know Z71, he is a good friend of mine and he knows his stuff out there. Its funny when dumb@sses comment or criticize people for a good day on the water. I think all of the debates and arguments have been made. No kiddin, takin a sail out of the water isnt healthy for the fish, but a person is either going to do it or isnt. Who cares what others say, its a personal choice. Its funny to watch all the yum yums on this website that sit out there and pointlessly argue about the same dead issues. I think we should focus more on fishing and reports and less on other things. Congrats for the sail caught from the 18’ boat. Glad the day went well and always be careful out there.

Congrats on the sail…but taking a small boat that far offshore is risky. But if you want to take the chance, it’s up to you.
I have been caught offshore in a thunderstorm on a picture-perfect forecast, and I was glad to have 36’ worth of boat under me that day.
An 18’ CC would not have had a chance.

we didnt hear all this crap when those boys a few months ago went to the 226 hole with a 19 ft key west and caught a bunch of wahoo and dolphin… it is just a shame that you guys think you cant have a good time offshore on a good day with a boat that costs less than 150k… just say nice catch and good on ya… it is their choice to fish out there in a smaller boat… and if you dont like it dont go with them…
Nice Sail … congrats!
Takes some brass ones to go 40 out in an 18 Wahoo!

Would it make anyone feel better if they realized that the Vermillion area isn’t 40 miles out of Georgetown?
Probably not, but in a small boat, the 32ish mile run back to the jetties can happen very quickly. Oh, and I made that trip many times in my 20’ key west, didn’t realize what perilous danger I was in at all.
I guess in all those trips we were lucky we survived at all!
Again, nice catch fellas! Strap a tank on some time and hover above the vermillion when the visibility is good - huge schools of all sorts of stuff there in Summer!
I usually don’t respond to the “small boat going 40+ miles offshore” threads anymore, because there are more than enough folks who express their opinion(which I share)about how foolhardy this is. There are just as many who say it’s no big deal, they’ve done it a hunnerd times, pick your day, yatta, yatta, yatta…
I make this offer: anyone who owns a small boat who wants to go offshore, let me know. I would be more than happy to have them join me. All I ask is they pitch in like every other member of my crew does and pull their weight. I would much rather do this than read about something bad happening to someone who followed the advice of the “pick your day” crowd.

IT FELT SO GOOD TO SAY THAT.
Edisto,
I saw the 43 mile number. Perhaps he traveled 43 miles, but he also stated that he was sitting on top of the Vermillion wreck, which is nowhere near that distance from the jetties. Might be from the ramp, but not from the opening of Winyah Bay.
It’s just a shade short of 30NM from the jetties.
Thank you for your ■■■■■■■■.

We did not leave from winyah bay.

I’m happy- if you yank that fish, get a photo to be proud of. Spread that sail, put a smoke in it’s mouth, let the dog hump it…
Many of you preachers who have fished since you were a peanut went out back then with few of the items you claim are essential to not being an idiot today. My grandfather and young me and a 23 ft boat to Frying Pan tower with only a radio and a call to the local coasties, who knew my grandad well. There was no gps and digital crap back then, it was “the way”. These guys weren’t at the gulf stream. In 10 years, we wil all be stupid for going today with our primitive epirbs.
A big boat doesn’t make you smarter or better prepared, sometimes it makes you stupid and cocky and causing risk to other boats as well. Everyone should have a “What if I only have 30 seconds” plan. May be all you have in any boat.

Dustoff, ive been fishing offshore for 19 years, and grew up fishing the Gov Cup in 40+ sporties. Now I fish a 19 out in 100ft of water numerous times each year. Does this make me an inexperienced dumb*ss as well?? All totaled up I ve only been offshore probably 480+ times so I guess I am a rookie, right? Fact is I am probably safer on the “little” 19 than many or most are on their bigger boats, and z71 is not far behind me. We even fish together some on a 19, guess that means double trouble.
" I’m gonna live forever if the good die young…"
Great job Z71. Nice fish. That ocean looked a whole lot better than the last time you were with me in my 19’. But ■■■■…22 gallons! You must have been on the throttle…I think we only burned twenty last time we fished in 100’.
Learning to reserch found to be a key to me and I hope this will be the result of anyone w/ lack of knowledge into Billfish matters concerning releases.
I caught my first sail (posted " 8/7 offshore pics included" by my friend.I was aware that handling the fish properly was key to survival rate of all fish and should be taken w great care, but that did not end for me.I needed more info.I’m still researching even as I post this reply on conservation.
I will share this bit of info replied to me by DNR on the law end of this matter in case some of my fellow fishermen are unaware of.
“Concerning the boating of billfish. Federal law prohibits the return of a billfish to the water if it has been boated. Simply put, if you bring it in the boat, it stays in the boat.”
This was copied and pasted as repied to me. Like so many of us,we want some great pics of our catch(myself included),but keep in mind that what you post on this site is subjected to not only pos and neg feedbacks from fellow members, but is viewed by “others as well”.
I’m aware not all views and opinions are shared in the same light, but if you have a copy of the Aug.“Sport Fishing” The magazine of Saltwater, read Fish Tales,“BIG SIZE!” Makes one think now does’nt it?
z71offshore, Great fish! I wanted this reply to help readers understand what I’ve found out. Hope there’s some action left when I get back in sept…
