Back to planers and big floats. Struck out on Ballentine (didn’t even see many fish) so we headed over to Salem Point fishing in mostly 15-35 feet of water. Water temp about 68.8 and in some places topped 69. Saw fish often enough and once even had three on at the same time which we managed. Caught 5 shorts, one 21, two 22, and one 24. Missed a few others. I thought it was a pretty decent day but the Capt now looks at any fish under 30 inches as a “short”.
She’s spoiled now.

Salem can be very good this time of year. An old tournament partner Tbone Terry Allen and I used to whack 'em pretty good over there! The humps and points out from what used to be the Brantley Castle are also a must-fish area. I haven’t fished that area in a while due to weekend boat traffic. However, y’all can do well over there fishing weekdays.

Is there some sort of map either for purchase or download that lays out most of what ppl refer to locations as? Cuz I have 3 lake Murray maps… None of which have hardly any names or help besides contours and physical shoreline…
Learning some of the places, but have no idea where most places ppl refer to are… Thanks

My Lake map has point names, underwater rapids, old bridges, creek names and many other points of interest for a fisherman. It is the sportsman map by Fishhunt.
Those maps are good, but you won’t always be able to find spots people may refference like “Big Gap, The Elbow, The Horseshoe…etc” by name. Alot of that is just lake slang. lol If someone is willing and goes far enough to tell you of a specific spot by name, they probably won’t have any problem telling you where it is is you don’t know.
The fishhunt map is pretty good though as far as having names for lots of the creeks. They may not have a specific point like Salem point pointed out by name, but lots of them you can tell by the name of the road, which is shown on the map for alot of the points.

Edit: I just saw the map I have at the house and it is not a Fishhunt like I thought. From Lunker’s post it sounds like it may be more detailed than the one I have.
I have had the map for many, many years. It is made here local in Leesville the map makers phone number is (803)532-4231, not sure if it is a good number. But it is a great map has all the old road beds and does show Salem point and many other points but not all the slang spots of course.
Im amazed by the different names given to the same place over the years. I’ve fished Murray since the middle 70’s and know some points that have had 4 names and some islands that have completely dissepered!
They have Fishhunt maps at Dreher…I stand corrected.
