Salem Skiff

Buddy has an Am Fab “Salem Skiff” he was given and is in the process of restoring. Looks like a 14’ Whaler or McKee. Made in Orangeburg and I believe it’s a 70 model.

Anybody have any info on these?

Thanks

YES!

I bought one in a shambles…spotted on the side of the road. Ended up getting it for $150, boat, motor and trailer. I had to buy new tires ($50), but sold the old motor for $120. Pulled it home and it sat in the yard for probably 2 - 3 years while I daydreamed about making time to restore it. Well, I never made time but a buddy of mine needed a boat and happened to have the spare time and experience to turn the boat into a solid floater. I traded the boat for his old Holland grill which also needed repairs (this I had enough time for!).

Here are a couple of before and after shots. Note - the 9.9 johnson was just a test to see how it would do. My buddy put a 15 hp Johnson on it and it does pretty well with 2 average sized folks. Also, shortly after the test run/maiden voyage, he put Durabak non-skid on the floor. Looks and feels wonderful. Boat has been catching fish…and I have been grilling!

the shishkabobs are solid.

Thanks for the info…boat looks good.

the exterior of that boat looks like an old 13 whaler

I believe my buddy’s is a 1970 as well. At least that is what the registration # says it is. It was in bad, bad shape, as you can tell by the trees growing through the deck…rooting in the saturated foam.

I’d love to see pics of your buddy’s project. A search of the internet does not return very much info on AmFab Salem Skiff. Although I did see one of the same vintage once at Murrells Inlet about 2 years ago.

Oh yeah and the kabobs were on point!

Nice job on an old boat. It does look like a old Whaler. The Am Fab place use to be in the back of the building or in the building adjacent to where the T & D newspaper place is now in O’burg. It’s dimise was a fire they claim was from fumes from the fiberglass in the plant. I remember when it burned. I want to say plant was idle for a while before it happened. Might have been used some but, not full time? I want to say it was in late 70’s when the fire happened.

Reel Karma, found this a few minutes ago online. Includes the address of the Amfab plant in SC. Says it is a trade-in guide? Pretty cool b/c it has hull specs, which I have never seen before.
