I am talking about plain old canned salmon. I love my recipe, but I am always interested in others…I might learn something new. Here is mine:
1 can salmon, drain and save liquid
1 egg, beaten
1 Tbsp* chopped jalapenos
1/2 cup* bread crumbs or crushed saltines
2 Tbsp butter
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
- I don’t actually measure the peppers or bread crumbs, so this might be a little off.
In a mixing bowl, combine and mix the salmon, eggs, peppers, and bread crumbs. If mixture is dry, add some of the liquid to make it moister. Make 4 patties, and fry in butter and oil over medium heat.
Super simple and tasty. What do you do differently?

Pretty much the same. 2 cans of salmon. 2 brown eggs. A little bit of flour. Black pepper. I fry mine in a cast iron skillet in about a inch of Canola Oil. Serve with grits

i like the recipe but i also add diced onions to it. that kicks it up to taste.
I sometimes add a little finely chopped celery and onion also. have made shrimp patties the same way with finely shopped shrimp…serve it one a bun as a shrimp burger too

I like to add a little bit of ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.

Larry, we do that sometimes too. Ketchup and worcestershire is a quick and easy dipping sauce for lots of things. I like it with chilled boiled shrimp too.

Me too, plus Tobasco. I’d add a little of that to the salmon too. Canned salmon needs all the help it can get:smiley:

Yeah, it’s not quite the same as fresh fish but it is comfort food for me. I used to think my mom was a very creative cook until I got older and started buying my own groceries. That’s when I realized that her creativity had a lot to do with the fact that we were broke! Canned salmon, weinies with mashed potatoes and cheese, chicken wings (they used to be cheap), fried bologna and egg sandwiches, etc. all made the food budget stretch a little further.

Sometimes “poor mans food” is the best food. I love a canned salmon patty with some grits. I love some good liver puddin with some eggs and grits. Cornbread and milk hits the spot also.

I make these all the time. They are completely awesome and a good burger alternative.

We grew up the same way. We ate low on the hog, or what we grew, caught, or killed. Creamed beef on toast was another cheap and regular comfort food in our house, otherwise known as SOS, bread, flour, milk, salt and pepper, and the cheapest pieces of sliced beef known to man, I still like that stuff, along with those salmon patties.
