Fished the Wando on Saturday and the Cooper on Sunday with a friend from out of town. Unbelievable weather, no wind, warm, and water temps from 61 to 67. Temps in Wando and Cooper were similar, coolest was way up the cooper past Mepkin Abbey at around 61degrees, warmest was on a Wando flat at low tide on Sat. Caught about 15 fish on Saturday, mostly reds. All the reds were caught around docks on the main river in 2 to 4 feet of water one to two hours before the low. Fish were eating muds, crabs, frozen shrimp and cut mullet on the bottom. Had one double and lost several on break offs. Got into another big school right at low tide but they weren’t eating anything. Hit my first red with a fly but he wouldnt eat a crab pattern:( Fished 8 to about 1:00. Also got one sheep on the 526 bridge and a few trout trolling hobcaw creek.
Sunday we started at 7:30 on the Cooper. Put in at Cypress Gardens, high tide was at 9:00. We fished some small channels and inlets and got a few bass early close to the launch. We then went up and fished a few creek mouths before fishing the Mulberry rice fields. Was was much higher than expected even though it was several hours after the high, also a very slow current. Weed lines were hard to find, but we were able to get about a dozen bass. The fish were scattered and we did not see many on beds, only two close to the low. Biggest fish was three pounds, most were around two. All the bass were caught on zoom worms in dark colors. Overall a great weekend even though numbers were a little low on the cooper because of the tide. Like everyone has been saying, fish like its May.
