Saltwater Fly Box

Has anyone ran across a fly box or product review in one of the fly fishing magazine on a fly box that won’t rust your flies if stored wet. Several months back I ran across an article that talked about a fly box that would accomidate wet salt water flies right out of the drink. Basically this box dried out the fly without rusting it or any of the other flies in your box. What a concept if it really works, according to the article you could store a soaking wet Merkin and come back in a couple of weeks later still fish any fly in the box. Once again, what a concept, unfortunately I did not write down the name down of the manufacture or the fly fishing magazine that contained the article so I’ve been SOL. Any suggestions?

I saw it in the Cabelas New Products insert in the new 2007 fly fishing version. hol on…MRT Fly box. that thing is cool.

try CnF Designs… they have a large saltwater box that is sealed with an O-ring… we have them in the shop in three configurations for different sized flies… they work well

I love my CF boxes but you must dry the flies first, this thing has a humidor(think cigars) strip that draws all the moisture out. Its kinda pricey, around 50 for the large, 45 for med. If you can dry em first the CF is almost indestructable

I’m not sure how the deal actually works but I do remember the article stating that you had to activate the chemicals by placing them in the micro wave if this rings a bell with anyone. Flambeau also has some nice sealed boxes out but like the one MM noted in his thread you still need to dry out the fly before it hits the box. Anyway thanks for the heads up!

Scotty d…you da man! I Googled MRT Fly Boxes and got several hits. The box is called “Dry-Tech” MRT by Angling Designs and is avaialbe through a number of on line outlets. It sure would be nice if a good local fly shop picked them up MM…hint hint! It looks like the larger saltwater boxes retail in the mid 40’s which is a bit high for a storage box but if it does what they says, which according to the tests and reviews it does, the darn thing will more than pay for itself in a couple of trips to the salt! I dropped $20.00 a piece into a couple of Flambeau’s back in the summer and while they are a great box, the fly has to be washed and dry before it’s put back into the box. According to the research, The Dry Tech box will handle wet or dry fly storage in either fresh or saltwater, what a concept! Thanks again for the info and if anyone has picked one up and tried it out, I’d love to hear about your experience with this new product.

im no alchemist but there has to be some limitation here. a dehumidifier can be reactivated by drying it back out occasionally, but to stop corrosion you would need some sort of sacrificial anode. they have those strips that can be put into tackle boxes but they would have to be replaced eventually. its not just a catalyst activity.

one solution is tube flies. then you can just use bronze and change em like a bait rig. some patterns dont tube well but most of what i see around can be. still thinkin on the spoontube—not much yet.

we dont need no reservations we dont need no cruise control

Cliff Outdoors, this company has some great boxes with lots of space. Anything from fresh to salt…check them out…Later

I beleive that the rust proof boxes in question have some type of removable & rechargable agent that is placed in the box then removed and recharged or replaced as needed. According to the research after a number of uses you simply replace the strips at around $5.00 a pop. When you think about it that’s still not a bad trade off if saves your flies.

As a college student I am always looking for cheap and effective means of fly storage.

A few years ago i bought a small plastic tool box from a hardware store and cut out a section of an old foam pad and then glued it to the roof of the tool box. now its my fly fishing tackle box. my flies have never rusted and it only cost me about $20.

Just a thought!

You da man!

I wonder if thier chemical pack would work with another box?

Cliffs large bugger box all the way!!!

Has anyone come up with any other options?

Hey Mike, are you guys going to pick this up at the Angler?

The booger barns are nice, we carried them for a while. We have a new company now called Fly-Fitters that produces some custom boxes for us. It uses the same high density slitted foam as the bugger barn but their double sided and clear so that you can see all your flies without opening the box… .they make them in a variety of sizes from small to a huge boat box size thats pretty cool… check them out.
