So I know that Gar are mainly freshwater fish (mainly around these parts). Growing up around Lake Murray had given me this conclusion… However, last night the wife get her first fish on her new rod and reel and was pumped. It jumped out the water at first and all i saw was speckles and for some reason right off the bat I thought… thats a big ole trout. She get it to the dock and come to find out, it was a gar! I was totally perplexed. Any way here is a shot of this creature and if some people could enlighten me on the occurrence of this in a saltwater creek, that would be great.</font id=“size2”>

Okay gotcha. It was still a pretty fun fight for her! It still baffled me when we got it to the dock.

There’s plenty of them in the creeks off of the Wadmallaw and Toogoodoo. You see them breaking the water feeding…drives me crazy because I keep thinking that they are red fish feeding.
We caught this on up Leadenwah, so basically the same area. Whenever i hear splashing and its not mullet or dolphin, I think redfish, but maybe this is culprit!

They show up a lot in the Leadenwah when we’re gigging…and can get quite annoying.

The Ashley and Wando are covered up at certain times of the year. I see them in the cooper too, but not as much it seems. When I used to fish above the 41 bridge, we’d almost always catch one or two on menhaden fishing for big reds.
Check back in gar holes in the fall… might find you a trout there…
Ill have to keep that in mind come the fall time.
Thanks,
B

I’ve caught a few in the cast net in the Broad River. Not as rare as I would have thought
