How do most of yall present cut bait or dead shrimp in a river setting? I had trouble getting a bite while bottom fishing with a carolina rig. After a while, I created a santee cooper rig (w/ cork about 5" from the hook). A finally got a fish. Why are rigs like this not popular in the saltwater setting?
Sounds like a flounder rig. I use them if drifting…
Slim…Check out the “Fish Finder Rig” Leader, swivel, sinker slide. Simple yet very effective. It allows your bait to move freely about, and gives the fish just enough time to get the bait into it’s mouth before the sinker tugs on the hook. Easy hook sets with Kale style hooks, or circle hooks…Just start reelin’!
^isn’t that the same as a carolina rig? Maybe play with leader length and strength…with the murky summer waters I normally use 18" of 30# leader with the minimum amount of weight to stay semi-put…lighter in clear water.
a lot of people get hung up on what is the most natural presentation… so a carolina rig is pretty much as natural as you can get… i prefer a fluro double dropper loop rig without all the swivels to get my bait off the bottom… then i tie the sinker on with a much lighter mono line so if I’m gonna get snagged i don’t loose the whole set up… but there are all kinds similar saltwater rigs to do just what you did… it might have been more of a coincidence… i mean i have a hard time believing a fish won’t go 5" deeper for a free meal… but then again maybe if a fish wasn’t feeding and just cruising you put it right in its face… who knows… do whatever works
Not “the same” as a carolina rig. The sinker slide allows you to change weights, both size and shape, in an instant. No retying. Sometimes I’ll change from a bank to a pyramid, or to a disk weight, or increase or decrease the actual weight I’m casting for distance and or current. I prefer the versatility and ease of the sinker slide component. I use carolina rig for active fishing when I’m easing a bait across the bottom when hoping to hook a flounder…the egg sinker moves smoother on the retrieve. When I’m dead sticking a chunk of bait on the bottom I prefer the fish finder for the reasons stated above.
I always just fish a Carolina rig with cut bait unless I’m in the harbor or at the jetties, in that case I use a fish finder rig.

God bless the “ignore” function.
What does the bead do some protection on the knot?
