Salty deer health

I got this pic off one of my camera. Looks pretty rough. Should I be worried about the health of this deer? Any comments Ed. (or anyone else)

looks sad

Do you typically corn heavy during the fall? Just curious, as many folks will create bait dependent deer who starve late winter, when most readily available, fat latent, food has yet to grow back in. The neck of this deer looks a little unnatural but from what i cant tell the body looks thick…

Come on dude, bait dependent??? That is a wild animal and there is plenty for them to eat year round in SC. And partners, a lot of things could be going on to make her look a little ruff, hit by a car, shot, kids driving her crazy, or just sick, plenty of disease that can affect deer. She doesn’t look that bad to me. A little sickly, but I’ve seen worse!

I’d eat that deer, bed head or not.

What salty said. 2016 Ballistic trauma just healing? Worms? I wouldn’t worry. She looks a little scrawny but you will notice a lot of deer looking “patchy” from loosing winter coats and some a little scrawny this time of year.

As for bait dependent deer? Never heard of it happening in S.C.

I’ve never shot a deer that had a belly full of corn in SC. Usually the belly contents look like what’s inside a lawnmower catch bag with some corn here and there. Our winters are not so severe to harm deer.

I agree, it was just an idea, after looking into it more I’ve noticed it defiantly is much more common in the north. It seems that deer take some time to adjust to different foods, and going from calorie dense corn to natural vegetation seems likely enough to have an impact.

She looks like she just woke up. Give her a break jeez.

What is hard to see in the pic is her hind quarter looks scarred and very rough. No other deer pics have that.

BTW- on the other side of that tree line is the river. I am going to clear about a 100’ opening for the view of the river and it will be a perfect place to set up a blind. The field she is in is a couple acres and will make a great food plot.
I’ll almost be able to sit on my balcony and hunt the cushy way:sunglasses:

This one is healthy

Ah yes the cushy way, ground blind, thermacell, bug spray, and the steady sound of wings humming their own rhythm reminding you that there is a few kamikaze rogue mosquitoes that are willing to die to suck your blood…that scenario almost reminds of our “cushy way” this past season. Good luck on the doe quota this year, it appears that a few select people on this site are already offering to put the smack down on that ol’ slick head if you are deciding to let her walk this year! I think she’s fine. We do like to corn them for an extra month or two after season on my place though. Not every field but enough to give the deer options.

Looks like she’s simply having a bad hair day!! LOL!!!

Seriously though, she doesn’t look like anything you should worry about. As far as the “calorie rich corn” comment, deer have lived a long time before man started planting corn piles. Natural browse is FAR more beneficial, and healthier, for a deer’s diet than corn. As some have eluded to, there’s always something green year round in the woods/fields of SC so it’s not like there’s nothing for deer to eat if it weren’t for corn piles and feeders. If you’re truly worried about healthy deer, this is the time of year to be creating mineral sites, in conjunction with protein rich supplements on your property. Plus, identifying and fertilizing natural browse areas on your property is another good management practice. Granted, everything mentioned requires more work, time and money than simply filling corn feeders or building corn piles but again, if you’re truly concerned with the health of the deer on your property, these steps are far more beneficial.

No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

Looks like she just came through a downpour or just swam across the river. Her coat looks wet.

Probably stressed out about phone bill, car payment, and how she will manage to get her son from baseball practice and her daughter from ballet before 3:00 today.

This is my new property in North Carolina. I have persimmon trees, grapes, tons of oaks, walnut trees, blueberries and pear trees. Food is not a problem.

Easy
In Oct I hunted in Colorado for elk. The outfitter actually has a spa in the middle of a draw that is fed by mineral springs where they can hunt.
