Saluda River Sun Eve

Put in at Corley Mill hoping to get some fishing in before the storms hit. Did a lot more paddling than fishing. Got past the second rapids and only got in about 20 min of fishing before the storms got close, so I headed back down and fished in the pouring rain close to the ramp. After working in the yard all day it actually felt pretty good. Never did get any stripers, but got a couple of jackfish, so I at least got to catch something for all my troubles. One nice size one and the other was smaller.

It is a pike, but not a northern pike, which most people know as a pike. Same genus as muskie and in fact we have two native species of this family, the Chain Pickerel (above, which is a real nice one) and the red fin pickerel, which doesn’t get much longer than 12", but is reportedly provides the sweetest meat in the low country. More info than you wanted I’m sure. Nice fish, what were you using? Looks like some kind of green plastic: do you prefer this to white for stripers?

Never too much info. Thanks.

It’s a Sluggo. Funny you ask about using white. That is by far my favorite color to use, but I was out and couldn’t find anyone selling them locally any more and that was all they had. I ordered some white ones online before I left for work this morning.

I had northern pike years ago(1967) in North Dakota. From what I remember, they tasted good, but were boney.

I hear they are very tasty but do have a lot of bones!

WILDBILL

Best fish to eat IMO, just make small vertical slits up its sides and fry a little longer and a lot of those bones cook up.

Geeez …you guys got me wishin I kept it now. I’m taking the kayak to work tomorrow and hitting the river afterwards. Hopefully I can catch a couple more…I just hope I can keep those big ole nasty stripers from trying to bite my line!! LOL

I really am going to give them a try if I catch any.

Tim,

Where have you found Slug-go’s locally? I’ve always had to order mine through Cabela’s and haven’t seen any around town…

how far up from Corley mill did you paddle? me and a few guys from work put in there and paddle down quite often, but I’ve never had a pickeral on the line …

They have tons of them at Dick’s and every one the same color.

I went up as far as just passed the 2nd rapids before having to turn back. I wanted to go down river and get out at gardendale, but it was getting ready to storm and I didn’t want to get caught too far from where I was going to take out,
