For any of you Striper fisherman who love to catch trout for bait the time is now. Yesterday I took my little Kayak to James Metts landing with a little corn and ultra light. Less then an hour later I had my limit, and was throwing some back. Most were 14"+…this means the big trout are running up stream…for all of you new to the area that means the nice Striper are moving up. Last week a 40lbs Striper was pulled out near the Zoo, and within the next few weeks we should be able to get them just behind the Dam. From what I am being told the bigger trout are just behind the Dam. Folks the Striper are running up and good fish should be caught between the Zoo and I-20 over the next two weeks…after that you should be able to catch them from Metts landing up. Save a few for me, but have fun and…be careful in the Rapids…lets not lose anyone this year. God Bless, Coach B
PS: Lake World has all the Herring you need and any other tackle that will surely make your day a good one. Trout are killing Corn, Rooster Tails, Power Bait, and Worms. For best results use Corn on a size 6, brim hook with just one small split shot…these are after all farm raised fish. For Striper use Trout or Brim for big fish or Herring for nice limit of keepers. Lake World has all of this, and can set you up with the best Guides around.

You can see pics of the 40 pounder and read about it here: www.striped-bass-fishing.com
The admin of the site lives in Columbia, and his wife caught the big fish. Interesting story-it was her first striper ever (I guess they call that beginners luck ).
The stripers are making their way up the Saluda & by the end of the month they should be all up & down the river.
The trout fishing now in the Saluda is the best I’ve seen in a lot of years. There are tons of trout, and as Coach said most of them are really good sized. Almost every trout I’ve caught recently has been over 10 inches, and last week I caught a five pound rainbow on my ultralight-by far the biggest trout I have ever caught. If you want to catch some nice trout, better hurry up before the stripers thin 'em out.
Coach,
I was fishing off the bank there yesterday afternoon with large shiners and didn’t do anything. I need to put my porta-bote in there and try for the trout. If I catch a five poud trout, I definately ain’t gonna use him for bait.LOL!
Let’s hope sometime soon we get a big gully washer to give them some water under their bellies. Seems like it always gets dry and SCE&G shuts the gates in May. In a couple of weeks we’ll know!
I would like to try fishing for trout on the lower Saluda but don’t have have clue where to start. Where can I put the boat in? Is that part of the river rough to run in? What do they hit–good, better, best? Any tips would be most appreciated. I’m from the greenwood area so that area is unfamiliar to me. Thanks for any tips
Rollerhead…first off I suggest you go to Lake World Bait and Tackle…if you don’t know were that is…Go to the Lake Murray Dam on the Lexington side. There will be a small white rustic bait shop that looks like a whole in the wall. That’s the best bait store around. Get a small can of corn, brim hooks, a few small split shot, and use ultra light rods and reels. Think of it like brim fishing with out a quark and using whole kernel corn as bait. Some folks will tell you spinners or flies, but these are folks who have forgotten these are farm fed fish. I use panther martins, meps, power bait, rooster tails some, but corn is by far the best. Now right in front of Lake World is the intersection of Hwy 6 and Corley Mill Road. If you will go down Corley Mill Road you will get about a mile or so and see a sign for James Metts Landing. The landing is down a road on the left. At the end of the road you will see a dirt road that kind of goes to the left a little and it dead ends at the river. Be careful this dirt road is thin and tricky when another vehicle is coming. The water here is swift, but I take it in my small bass boat or Kayak all the time. I recommend you hook up with someone who has been down there before so you can find the path of deeper water otherwise you might hit a rock or two. However I learned the path by trial and era…sure I bent up my prop, but now I can take that river in the middle of the night with no lights. If you would like I should have time to hit the river some next week and would be happy to show you the paths and put you on some nice trout. Just keep in mind the best spots tend to be just before or after the rapids. Hope this helped. God Bless, Coach B shoot me an e-mail if you want to hook up and have me show you some spots. If anyone gets brave and attempts going on that river alone, CAUTION, CAUTION, CAUTION!!! I’ve heard of too many people coming to a sudden stop in that river, and have a few pieces of my prop in there as well. Be careful, but if you learn that river, and the paths, it is an incredible fishin hole
