Do you guys know a good spot to drop in the Saluda around Lexington? I just moved there and going down I-20 near 378 you pass a mighty fishy looking piece of water. I have a 14ft Kayak that I will be fishing out of. Any help would be great!
Thanks

Go to Hope Ferry on 378 side of Saluda Shoals Park on St Andrews side. Those are only two landings are are across the river form each other. There is one other thrown in about 3/4 way down to interstate on Shoals Park side. A SCE&G road. I saw it on Saluda TU chapter forum. There is a map on there too. Be careful - flow can get nasty down there.

Thanks Jford,
What do you mean by the flow? Is the current really bad? what should I look for? What can I catch there? Thanks for your help!!

What he probably means is that they can release water without warning. It can go from a raging river in 5 minutes. There are warning sirens at metts landing and the zoo. Last weekend 9 people had to be rescued when the water went up.

SCE&G is letting a lot of water out now because the lake hasn’t come up at all.

:question::question::question:

Not hardly-the river has been bone dry since February, other than two days earlier this month.

I drive over the river every day on my way to work and it ain’t “bone dry” but my cove is!

The river has been running at a minumum, and there has been very little rain. It takes a lot of water to bring a lake of that size back up. Would you like them to shut the water off completely and wipe out the whole river system below so you have water in your cove. Just because people on the lake have money does not mean the world revolves around them.

Kloudking-
I understand your pain-I was up at Murray last weekend and it is a bit ridiculous. But believe me when I say the river has been extremely low for months. It is extremely difficult to get up & down the river in a jon boat now, and the striper fishing has been poor this spring because of the low water.

Bottom line is that SCE&G screwed up when they dropped the lake down to 348 to do maintenance on the dam. That should have been done in September or October; we didn’t get much rain from February on so the lake didn’t come up more than two feet-and that was with the plug in the dam.

Also, everybody reading this thread should take note of the initial post. SCE&G has run the water wide open most of the day on two separate occasions this month because of canoeing/rafting events on the river, and they plan to do the same thing on June 5 AND 6 for a rescue training drill. The first day they ran the water the lake dropped 2/10 of a foot that day.

Now does it make sense to run this much water for these purposes with the lake so low?? I say not. But then again that is just my opinion-but I bet a lot of folks would agree.

Steelytom,
Relax. Not everybody on the lake is loaded. I’m certainly not! This is a striper fishing forum is it not? Last summer sce&g ran all of the turbines and killed thousands of stripers. They will probably do it this year also. SCE&G cares nothing about lake homeowners, saluda river fishermen, stripers, trout, brim, anything except generating electricity.

SCE&G = Numbnuts:dizzy_face:

I appologize, I just hate to see the river suffer. I guess if one of those beached boats where mine i would be raising hell. I wrote that post while ticked off at work when I should have been fishing. probably should not have

No sweat - Maybe we can hook up and go fishing together sometime.

my question is it safe to go out and kayak fish the river around Lexington? I don’t know of any other kayak fisherman in Columbia (moved 2 weeks ago), so I would be going out solo. Anyone that wants to go let me know. I am dying to get out and fish.

Dawgcatcher,
I always see kayaks on the river. If you are concerned about rapid rising water there is a siren at James? Metts landing. It is right off of Corley Mill Road (Right off of 378 near Rt 20). A lot of people kayak around the zoo as well. The zoo has the other warning siren. Depending on your experience level, the rising water might be fun.

Kloudking,
sounds good, I’ve been looking for a fishing partner since I moved here. Seems like everyone I know would rather golf. Golf’s ok, but its not fishing. I don’t have a boat (yet) so I mainly just fish the rivers. But I did rent a boat on Murray two weeks ago and caught some nice ones. Send me an email if u want to get together. My email is thomolek@yahoo.com
