Came down from Charlotte Monday evening with plans of heading offshore in search of the ever-plentiful Carolina Gold. Got word about an hour after getting to the Lowcountry that the boat wasn’t ready. As such, trolling was now out of the question, but there was a chance for some bottom fishing. Went to be bummed but hopeful.
Got a call from my invite around 9:00 Tuesday morning with more bad news: boat still wasn’t ready, so there’d be no bottom fishing either.
Figured there was no sense in moping around, so I called and had my boat pulled, figuring I’d get in a few hours inshore. One problem-I’d brought NONE of my gear with me. Called the wife, explained the situation, got her blessing to purchase a new outfit () and headed to Haddrell’s to pick up some new “emergency” gear. Met up with my man Scott H., and walked out with a sweet new rig, a Symetre 3000 paired with a Wright and McGill 7’0 split-grip rod, as well as the basics for a day on the water.
Fished the Folly an hour before and an hour after low tide. Managed two fish, a 17-incher and an over-slot 24-incher. Beautiful day on the water, and a happy ending to a disappointing start.
FYI-for those of you who’ve never fished a Symetre, I HIGHLY recommend you do so. I have six Battles and like them very much, but I’d probably do all Symetres if I were to do it again. Lightweight, strong and super-smooth.
