Same place, different year

Took the gheenoe out today with one goal in mind…winter reds! Got the opportunity to fish solo again today and headed out to fish the low tide for some winter time reds. Low and behold, found the schools staged up in the exact location that I had many many years ago…and yes you guessed it, these are huge fish that get a lot of pressure. But that didn’t phase me because I have found a way and color pattern that will make these bruisers eat the artificial like none other. Several boats ahead of me and beating the flat up like most people do…and not one fish was ever uncovered because these fish know how to stay concealed in 18" of water. My turn came up and my plan of attack was implemented…just one problem, I learned today that an elbow injury earlier in the year is not allowing me to get any real good hook set. But I will say, the schools of reds consisted of about 15-25 fish and the small ones were in the upper 20’s and a majority of the fish were mid 30’s. I could get the fish on for about 3-5 seconds which was enough to see and feel the rod bend with drag screaming…
Then the hook would pull out and I would just wait for them to calm down and do it again. It was a bit disappointing that my inability to bring one all the way in but considering the circumstances, those other boats that tried didn’t produce what I made happen. Fun times still being on the water!!!
