San Juan PR

O for 9 on Tarpon yesterday. saw hundreds. Today my 11 year old caught his first blue marlin as we went 2-2 on billfish, catching a sail and a blue marlin both before noon 3 miles offshore. wanted to add whitey for the slam but my son was too tired after fighting and releasing a blue on a 20. Proud Papa coached him through the battle and had no problem coming in at noon after his epic catch:smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley:

This is why we come here.

Congrats to the little dude

Nice! Lot’s of whites in that area too, so totally doable!!!

Fishing in places like this and Guatemala make it very hard to grasp the 60 plus mile runs at home.

Who did you fish with? I was in san Juan, PR last week. Offshore 4/1/2015 and no bites. Fished for tarpon 4/2/2015. Jumped two tarpon but none in the boat. Saw many tarpon.

How long was your run to Guatemala?

I fished for Tarpon with Captain Omar Orraca who I first fished with 10 years ago and have fished with many times since. This was the first time I have not caught a tarpon with him. I also fished with his guys Kevin and Victor on his 35 Bertram Fighting Lady. He is based out of Congreyas Yacht Club in Isla Verde. Omar has been featured in many articles in Sportfishing. These guys are light tackle fanatics. The first time I fished with him I caught an 80 pound tarpon on a 6 pound system. My son caught the marlin on a tld20 with 20 pound line and 80 leader. Omar was recently featured for his kayak fishing trips for Tarpon with in the last year in Sportfishing.

The run to Guatemala is quite long. The run to the fish in Guatemala can be anywhere from 3 to 50 miles but when good averages about 12 to 15 miles. Puerto Rico you only have to go a mile to hit the ledge of the Trench.

Long runs in the USA are a good thing for the fishery. Look no further than South Florida where they have 1-3 mile runs to the fishing grounds. Fishing is dismal down there for any species that is not catch-and-release.

I am all for eliminating all kill tournaments and moving to all catch and release. It works other places and the hang the fish for all the dock gawkers needs to go. I have suggested this many times and have heard all the arguments against it and none of them make sense. Conservation should take priority.

Not talking about tournaments. Talking about every day dolphin, tuna, wahoo, grouper, snapper, etc...

Our billfish tournaments in SC are catch and release for the most part. Hanging out a marlin to dry every once in a while isn’t going to collapse stocks. I bet they hang them out daily in Guatemala.
