Just returned from a trip to the San Juan River in New Mexico. Caught numerous rainbows from 16-24". This is a truely finess type of fishing using 4 weight rods, 6 and 7x tippets and number 20 to 24 flies. If you ever have the chance to fish this trophy water by all means go. It really hits home how fisheries management can improve a body of water. The first three and a half miles of the River below the dam are no kill and fish are big and plentiful. After that the bait chuckers are legal but there are almost no fish and the ones that are there are small stockers. You would have to be pretty dense not to see the difference. I only wish we could institute no kill areas around here but the local good ole boys would pitch a fit! It was pretty cold as we had frost three out of five nights.
